hello all. i am really interested in anest. im starting 4th year now and i havent found anything that i even remotely enjoy more than gas. so i think this is what i want to do. i am an US IMG, 210+ step 1 (2nd try😡). aside from taking the step 2, what can i do to make myself more competitve. ive got 2 gas rotations at 2 hospitals i want to do residency at, how can i make the most of them. its kinda scary, i dont want to do anything else, and i wont be happy in FP or IM. Im already stressed out. the whole match process is going to be torture isnt it? thanks for your time guys

I think the best think you can possibly do for yourself is rotate. Visiting Rotations= Interviews. You have two which is a good start but I would try and pick up a few more. Remember they don't all have to be in anesthesia. You can do ICU/SICU, pain or even a research elective. Take Step two early, improve your score, and you should be fine.

i think the match process is kind of torturous for everyone regardless of scores... if your grades are good and you rock step two then step one will seem like an outlier, random thing in your otherwise great app. research is a good idea and bump up the rest of your app with extracurriculars etc. if you don't rock step two apply widely. i know some people who have gotten some good interviews with some red flags like failing a class or below average scores. good luck

Or both of those.

Do all you can on Step 2 - like a crazy amount of review questions (or however you learn best), and do awesome on aways. If you work hard, and are likeable - and fit with the current people, that goes a very long way.

You have to be someone everybody else would enjoy working with, and demonstrate you're at least teach-able. The former of those probably fits you more than the latter.

Listen, man...

visiting rotations + likeability + strong work ethic = interviews
phone call from PD to PD + follow up emails = job offers

O.K.? Got it? Good...luck.
