OK, so i haven't actually totally passed out on the unit, but whenever i see someone with a particularly bad injury or someone in a lot of pain i get all woozy and sweaty and have to run to the bathroom and lean over the sink for several minutes. does anyone else have this problem? will i ever get over it?

eat and have a coke. Also dont wear gloves or a mask unless you have to.
Good advice.

You're passing out because your blood pressure is dropping very low when you observe a disturbing injury. With low blood pressure, less oxygen will be reaching your brain, and your body will try to get horizontal as a protective mechanism in order to restore oxygen to your brain.

The best way to prevent this from happening is to do things that maintain your blood pressure:
1. Make sure you drink lots of fluids so that your blood volume is high.
2. Consider consuming caffeine, which typically raises blood pressure.
3. Keep moving around on the unit. Don't stand in one place without moving around for an extended period of time. At the very least, do calf raises (toe raises) to keep the blood flowing.
4. Hope that you body's reaction to the injuries will subside over a period of time. I don't think there was ever a medical student who couldn't make it through medical school because of this, which suggests that everyone gets used to it eventually!

I found out most students experience this once or twice. However if you are going through this regularly there seems to be other issues going on. As someone mentioned make sure you have eaten properly (this way you will throw up instead of passing out. 😉 ) and have a sugary drink. If that fails, have a complete physical to rule out a physical problem and then concentrate on the person rather than the injury.
