How can med school accepted more than its seats?

Hi, everyone, I always hear that med school tend to send acceptance more than it can accommodate because not everyone will enroll, but what if it turns out the enrolled student more than the seats available? Can it be possible? Will the acceptance of some students will be taken away because of this? Just curious! Sorry I am so neurotic! Would appreciate if anyone who knows how admission works can help!!!

@Goro will tell you that it is "black magic" practiced by the deans of admission but it is years of experience, lots of antacids in the month of April and the pressure to get it right or lose your job!

It can happen that a school will have more matriculants than it has room for. In those very rare cases, a school might offer an inducement to start a year later -- it could be the equivalent of a year of free tuition or an opportunity to enroll in a masters program at no charge before starting med school, or some other way to reduce the class size for that year by transferring the students to a later year. Of course, they will also be very generous in saying yes to anyone who wants to defer a year.

Some schools also have an estimated number of seats they would like to fill but can go a bit over and under with no repercussions. At least that's what some dean told me.

I believe this happened with CCOM last cycle and they had to defer a lot of students to start this year instead.
