How close is "in the area"?

Within driving distance, I'd say. If you're flying into New York City from CA and expecting an interview at Columbia, that's "in the area," but if you're going to be visiting Walt Disney World w/ your family and expecting an interview from Emory, 450 miles away, that may not be worth saying you're in the area. Even moreso if you're talking about visiting San Diego and emailing OHSU to see about an interview if you're from Boston. Sure, same "side" of the country but ~1100 miles away (16 hr drive).

If you are going to the East Coast, figuring on traveling between cities by train (Amtrak) or bus. I'd say 3 hours away by train is "in the area". So: from Southern NY: Philly or New Haven. From New Haven: NY, Providence & Boston. From Philly: NY, Maryland & DC.
