How come more people don't use the IRC network?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

How come more people on SDN don't utilize the irc network and chat in real-time? It's irc.studentdoctor.net, and it seems like no ones ever on there... by the way for those who don't know what it is, its a chat program that allows users to to communicate in channels, through private messaging, etc. For those of you familiar with online gaming, you might also be familiar with the popularity of IRC (gamesurge, enterthegame, etc.) This is the wiki -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IRC

I was surprised that SDN had a network but even more surprised that no one uses it 🙁👎....

Using IRC doesn't raise your postcount though! What use is that?

lol... well you can easily do both. IRC is fun sometimes cause you can shoot the breeze with other like-minded people without having to wait for someone to post. And judging by some of the things people say on here, IRC would make for some really memorable conversations.

Frequency dependent selection, IRC vs forums style.

I used to be involved on WebChat (the company that developed the well-known java client) but when I got to college it kind of faded away. I forgot all the programming language and the knowledge I learned while involved, oh well.

I didn't even know about this. Thanks.

Don't you watch any of those Dateline NBC investigations? It always starts with a few lines in a chat room. The next thing you know, it escalates to the point where you want to go meet the person you're chatting with. Then when you show up at their house and there's Chris Hanssen and you get tackled at gunpoint by the police and end up on "To Catch a Predator".

This is why I avoid chatrooms

if you are having problems connecting to irc.studentdoctor.net you should make sure the port is 6667. With mIRC (www.mirc.com) you can simply type "/server irc.studentdoctor.net 6667" and itll take you where you need to go.

Chris Hansen FTW!

You gave the server but not the channel. 😕

channels are simply "chat rooms" ... and Baccus, you should use an mIRC client, its much more reliable. www.mirc.com ... its really not hard. if you can understand glycolysis, you can understand how to use this simple little program kids

Heres a small tutorial...

1.) download/install mIRC from www.mirc.com
2.) Open the program, get past all the stuff about registering it, etc. It says
you have 30 days but in reality you can use it forever without paying a dime.
3.) Enter a name and e-mail (they don't have to be real but you have to enter this
info because the servers identify you by a hostmask, which uses part of your
e-mail address to formulate)
4.) Enter a nickname and backup nickname, you can't have the same nick as
someone else using the same network
5.) After you finish filling out the information, go to "Servers" which
is a sub-field of the "Connect" tab you are currently in.
6.) click "Add" on the right
7.) Fill out the fields as follows:
Description: SDN (or whatever you want to call it)
IRC Server: irc.studentdoctor.net
Ports: 6667
Group: leave blank
Password leave blank.

8.) Click on the SDN server you just added and click "select" on the righthand side.
9.) You'll be back in the "Connect" menu. Click on "connect" and you should connect
to the server. You'll see a bunch of text scroll up. When it stops, you'll see this
(or something like it):

There are 11 users and 8 invisible on 2 servers
1 operator(s) online
3 channels formed
I have 14 clients and 1 servers
-
Current Local Users: 14 Max: 14

10.) In the main window, type "/join #lounge" - Alternatively, you can go up
to "Commands" - "Join Channel" and type #lounge.

You can also type /list
This will list all the channels on the network with more than 3 people.

I didn't know people actually used mIRC to chat... When I was in high school I just used it to download stuff... I got scared because people would always try to send me files that I didn't request so when I got my new laptop for school I didn't bother downloading it at the risk of eventually getting a virus.

Connection Refused.

try connecting directly to the ip of the server...

/server 66.252.1.159 6667

the irc networks where people download stuff aren't all like that, its very secure so long as you aren't completely dumb and accept files from strangers entitled "CIRCUS_FUN.mpg"

It's too easy to pretend to be someone else. Apparently someone's trying to smear my good name already. 😡

I use IRC have been for 14+ years, I wouldn't want to connect to a seperate SDN server though. I'm on Efnet a fairly large popular network, there should be a #sdn on there. =P

Edit: I just joined #sdn and there are people there!

IRC network is still sweet cept it sucks cause its on EFNet. But all of the people there are real cool... so im bumpity bumpin this one.

Bumping this because I use IRC and I love SDN. I'm on irc.studentdoctor.net #sdn/#lounge and EFNet (random server) channel #sdn. Am I doing this right? There are very few people in the channels... 🙁

You probably are... Almost no one uses it though... Bumping this thread might lead to a resurgence for a day or two.
