I was originally going to ask what the low-tier programs are. Then I thought I would lay it on the line and get some advice (brutal advice is welcomed). I did quite poor on my step 1 because of outside problems.... 187 to be exact. I plan on taking my step 2 in the first week of august so I may receive my scores a bit earlier and may present a better score to the perspective schools in which I am applying. I also forgot to mention that I am a U.S. citizen but went to a caribbean medical school...as my name implies..Ross.

With all that said. Is it possible for me to get in anywhere? or am I just hoping.....I dont know how competitive psych is.

One last Q... is it hard to get into fellowships? such as child psych?

thanks for ur advice really appreciate it.....

I know more than a few people that have taken the USMLE more than once and landed fairly competitive psychiatry residency slots. So in that respect, it's not out of the question. Ross doesn't present a large problem either, as many US psychiatry residents are foreign trained. Poor board scores and foreign grad can equal more difficult time getting competitive places, however.

If you're willing to relocate, interview ok to well, and apply to enough programs, you'll get a psychiatry residency most (not all) of the time.

Psych fellowships vary in their competitiveness and are said to be getting more competitive...especially child. That said, there are still ample opportunities. Be sure to publish if you can in residency, and get good letters.

Good luck

thank you...i guess this was not a popular post. I looked at some psych salaries..but they were pretty varied? anyone know of a more "valid" salary survey for psychiatrists?

Hey RossU, I'm sort of in the same boat as you are, a carribean grad who wants to do psych next year. From what I understand, its not that difficult for img's to get psych, but like the last post said we won't pick from the best programs and may have to relocate
good luck to you
