I'm not sure how people generally regard Temple School of Medicine. Is it up there with the Top 50 ? Top 25? How is its reputation? Residency matches?

Temple has a medical school? 😀

i'm curious to know also. it's not ranked on USNEWS. does anybody have that Gourman ranking..maybe it's on there. if anyone also has Miami's rank (if it's on there) i'd like to see how they compare.

They are supposed to provide an above-average clinical experience. But that's all I really know, even though I interviewed there, which goes to show how my interview went (not good).

When I interviewed in December I found out a few things:
1) Temple doesn't receive almost no NIH funding, which could in fact cause it to not be ranked in the US News Report, contrary to what others have argued on this site.
2) Clinical opportunities abound there. They see everything. You are trained really well to be a practicing physician.

I think that if you wantto be an extremely well- trained practicing physician temple has a lot to offer in terms of exposure and preparation for residency. If you wantto go into academic medicine, try to go to a "Top 25" program (whatever that means) for its reputation and massive research program and funding. If you wantto be a great physician, Temple can do that for you. I would be happy there except I am not ready to fork over the dough for it. I think that Tulane also fits into the same category as Temple, not ranked in US News, so people tend not to think of it as a "great" place to be. 🙂

I found this. Don't know how current it is and it only goes to #30.

i'd seen that before. i think it's pretty old (just a few years, i think). for some reason those Gourman people don't put their stuff on the net because i've tried searching before and only got that same list because some company decided to put it up. but i'm sure the folks with those MSARs have those numeros. paging doctora foxy....

In terms of the validity of that Gourman Report
web page someone posted up:

Minnesota #15 and Wash U #18? Come on!

well cavey I'm not sure what you were paging me for, but I did just look at my MSAR. All it says about numbers is that for the class of 2000, the average science gpa was 3.4 and mcat sciences were 10s. Last year (2001-2002) they had 7100 applicants, 1116 were interviewed and 206 new entrants.

In my Barron's guide: it has info for the 1999-2000 class. mean gpa 3.42, same as science gpa. mcats: 29.8, 10.1ps, 10.3bs, 9,4verbal

wow, 3.4 average gpa????? that seems a little low compared to less competitive med schools, doesn't it?

also cavey, in the past, I believe Miami and UF used to make it to number 50 in usews, but have slipped. I think that's why their averages seem so high now compared to more competitive schools (like 3.7 average gpa)--they are trying to get competitive applicants to beef up their ranking

I agree that Temple has a great reputation for clinical experience. Good location to learn a lot.

UCSFreak I didn't want to come across as a crybaby or anything, but just wanted to make a point that the Gourman Report list was just a little too far-fetched for some of the schools. The top 10 schools don't surprise me, but I just had an issue with some of the schools. In any case, I cannot come up with a reliable list since there is none. Everyone will have an issue with the methodology or bias that a ranking uses. We've all seen the heat US News has taken. Until there comes a time when medical schools can be ranked objectively, there won't be a reliable list that we can all agree on.

I agree with daredevil and megkudos. From what I have heard, Temple has a great rep and is an excellent med school. Maybe they have a low average gpa because their students are coming from very competitive undergrads with grade deflation???? 😕

Perhaps the best way to rank schools depends on the person. If you are interested in a particular specialty, rank the schools yourself regarding their match lists. Same logic can go for other factors of interest as well. Say you're interested in derm---well whichever school has the best match would be #1 on my list if that were my top priority. USNews doesn't matter that much if we don't want to do research or primary care.

So where can we find match lists? On the schools' websites?

I would rather trust my own instincts about a place, than the US News or Gourman rankings.
Its too bad residency programs may place emphasis on your school "rank and rep".
Peace

well i guess since apparently those MSARs don't have the lastest Gourman reports so that we can see what Temple is ranked, we'll never know....

one thing's for sure though. and this is something we've all learned from this experience: human poop is foul. (relevant?--you be the judge)
