how competitive is this....

Why did you...er....I mean he....switch?

Same story over and over. Apply widely (everywhere). Network if possible.

Pubs are awesome, otherwise stats are poor for rads.

What do pass and high pass correspond to? C and B respectively?

not quite sure what HP is for him... i'm guessing it is B+/A- work...

He has as much chance as the vikings beating my Eagles this weekend. He is obviously a medicine person who decided he wants a good life and great money. THey will see through that. His Board score is low for rads, but I guess it wouldn't count him out. The previous posters are correct that he(you) should apply widely, esp. to 3rd tier programs. Also, if he doesn't have a stellar rads LOR, well, he has as much chance as T.O. coming back to the Eagles in time for the SB!

well is TO is back in the super bowl, and from what i hear, my friend is competitive since he's from a top 5 school, even with his "average stats." i asked my dean at rush about rads, and well for me, he said it would be much harder 🙁

Ok now you people are scaring me. Lately I've been thinking about it, and the more I do, the more I like radiology. It's so wicked. My hobby for the past 6 years has been nothing but computers, photoshop, etc., I'm a tech geek like that. Fuse computers with imaging and medicine and you have radiology. And great money to boot. It's my dream job, literally.

I'm only a first year undergrad student who isn't even close to getting into vanilla medicine yet, but the more I think about it, the less I want to get stuck doing something other than radiology in the field of medicine. 🙁

Only 14 yrs 'til you're a radiologist!
It won't be anything like it is today. There will handheld mammography you can take to bars, many innovations!

Are you replying to me? If so...

Yea I know, it's gonna be amazing. My dream job, I love the stuff.

I'm worried about not getting into radiology in the first place though. That's my concern. I always think too far ahead, I'm not even in medicine yet, let alone rads. The only real reason I want to do meds though is to get into rads, that's it. I love rads.

If I get stuck not getting into rads, it will suck.

I like your style Dude. You might, however, be just a little premature in being so sure thats what you want to do. I think you've made a great choice obviously, but seriously, relax and slooow down. There is no need to worry about getting into rads right now. Just focus on jumping through hoop number 1...getting into medschool which has many little hoops to jump through in order to do that..MCAT etc. Your time will come, but not anytime soon.

Note: and when it comes time to interview for medschool, don't tell them that the whole reason you want to go to medschool is to be a rad...that probably won't go over too well with the committee 🙄

TRUST me, I know I want rads. 😛
Yeah, all those hoops have me scared. I always tend to think way too far ahead though, and scare myself with a "there's so many hoops and I'm bound to stumble at some", and "holy crap there's so many smart people out there with the bigger stats than me etc., there's no way I'll make it". I wish I couldn't think ahead like that, it's annoying.

Yea but I don't want to BS my way through my interviews either. I think the biggest hoop for me will be the interview. I'm too honest.

I had the same mentality of 'no BS' when I was applying to med school--I was perhaps a bit too honest when describing my motivations for medicine and what I thought was wrong with particular aspects of the field. I had much less success with the application process than my peers, who seemed to be much less competitive applicants than myself. The point I'm getting at is that the whole application process is a game, and sometimes, you have to play their games to be successful. I agree with the above poster who advised that you not tell admissions officers that radiology is the only field you are interested in. Focus on why you want to do medicine, as opposed to physics PhD, or computer engineering, etc. . . (Not on why you want to do radiology, as opposed to other medical specialties).

Well, then...you certainly could never make it as a radiologist.

Wait, is that honest or decisive? I get the two confused.

you're a first year in undergrad and you KNOW you want rads?! and you're afraid of getting stuck in something else?! you haven't see anything else...and you probably haven't spent a whole day with a radiologist either. cut it out. i would urge you to keep an open mind. more than 75% of people change their mind about specialty choice during med school (many of them several times), as well as during residency. it's great that you like computers, but that's not what the job's about. it's like one saying that he loves scalpels and is therefore going into surgery.

as far as the interview is concerned...it's not really about what you say (unless you're saying something ludicrous) it's about how you say it. it's about how you carry yourself. it's a test of how you can assess people and work with them (read - figure out what the other guy wants to hear and tell him that). but, if you want to make it in medicine and pre-med you're gonna have to learn how to BS.

I've spent many full days with different rads actually. And it's not that I "like computers" etc. I've always been good at the whole logical steps to solving a problem/figuring something out deal... sticking to an algorithm, but deviating from it ("thinking outside the box") if necessary. I'm also good in arts and such, I'm good with visuals, and I nitpick A LOT with ANYTHING, especially if its required, so I could imagine being a good radiologist. I also like medicine in general because it's science that helps people, and it's always getting better.

Also, you know how in general, some people are kinda clueless with medical stuff? Like they ask weird questions in bio class that you might obviously know the answer to because "it makes sense" or "that's just how it works because it's obvious". I think I'd make a good doc overall. I just "get it" by default. Now I just need to read the bazillion papers on meds and learn the material, and learn all the clinical stuff, because THAT is what I'm kind of unsure about.

And about "learning to BS", I guess I will, if that's what it takes, though I hate to do something like that.
