Family medicine residency applicant:

Caribbean grad

Step 1: 213

Step 2CK: 218

Step 2 CS: still waiting for results

I’m interested in applying for preliminary or transitional spots to enhance my application for the next cycle in case I don’t match into FM this year. What’s are my chances of matching into transitional or preliminary-medicine spots?

Thanks guys!

Typically, most TY and a fair number of medicine PGY-1 prelim are very, very competitive. Particularly for programs with "easier/lax" hours. The spots are largely taken by very competitive sub specialty applicants from Derm, Rads, Optho and others that don't start in earnest until Pgy-2.

Prelim surgery are much, much more accessible and less competitive but the programs can be absolutely brutal and essentially just a year of scut work. Unfortunately, a lot of these spots around the country fill in the SOAP with IMGs.
