Hi,

I watched a CT scan performed a couple of time from the control room, so my question is how dangerous is it in terms of radiation. The control room has a huge window from which a CT machine as well as a patient is visible.

Is it at the UCDMC? When i volunteerd at the ER, they made me transport patients to CT south all the time. Its safe, don't worry. iF not all the techs there wouldn't just stand there like that. You only have to wear protective gear within a few feet of the machine. Otherwise you're safe.

The glass actually has lead in it, and so do the walls. The control room is safe and even if you are lying on the table the dose of radiation is fairly minimal.

Thanks! I was definately worried about it.

Btw i volunteer at SFGH, it's such a good place to be at. People that work there are super nice. But anyhow, for those who are applying into UCSF, that place will be your home for the last 2 years of your med school

from the control room?? no danger whatsoever. By radiation safety standards, and regulatory guidelines they meet standards to block any radiation exposure to personnel. Tme, distance, shielding is the key and I'm sure the walls are either lead lined or thick enough to block any ionizing radiation. How else could radiologists and radiology techologists work there everyday? They wear film badges that record any exposure and anyone receiving any dose would be notified and the causative factor evaluated. Don't worry, they coudn't operate a practice if there was any radiation exposure.

you don't even have to wear protective gear near by. There is a very well defined collimation system such that the radiation only comes out of the "donut" in the CT scanner. Otherwise the patient would also need protective gear on any anatomical part not needing scanning.

Hey there,
I volunteer at SFGH too, and I have watched CT scans being done many times. Like everyone said, don't worry, it's safe. Which days do you volunteer there?

Right now whenever I can, since I'm going to stop volunteering as soon as my school starts (sept 30th). But I did volunteer there yesterday and going to do it again tomorrow at 8

It increases your chances of developing Sherman's legions (A particularly nasty form of valbular cancer) by about 100 fold.
