Anyone at UB, may I ask you a general question because I am interested in pursuing Pharm.D at UB.
I heard the UB south campus is kinda dangerous and has high crime rate. How dangerous can it be?
Thank you very much

it is my #1 choice right now, but after reading those, it kinda freaks me out. Because i am an easy target, those bad ppl are definitely going to rob me if i am there walking alone.🙁

also, they try to move pharmacy school to south campus completely by the year 2010, so that's why i worry so much.

I never had a problem and this is my second year at UB, where 50% of my classes are in South Campus.

I had a late class in the summer, which was till 10:30 pm and I had no problems. Anyways the place where they are building a new pharmacy school is right next to the parking lot. By the way you will get out of class with a bunch of other classmates so I don't think you would have a problem there. The campus is close to the city/bad neighborhood but in my opinion it is pretty safe.

I am at UB and i did my undergrad at canisius which is right down the street. Crime is not bad, just to be safe travel in packs late at night. I mean just follow typical protocol; lock your doors, and such. Really no big deal.... Besides the school is awesome

Funny that we were talking about this... I just received an e-mail from UB police...

Please remember there is always safety in numbers. Call the University Police to report any suspicious activities and please us the Safety Escort Program. Call 829-2584 for information

And this is any different from any other campus, especially a large one? Ehh... your fine, with eleventy billion strong at UB theres bound to be something that happens. I wouldn't read much into it... trust me, Canisius was much worse then anything youd see here

I don't know I feel safe in UB. Just good advice, DON'T TRAVEL ALONE AT NIGHT!

i have one more question. Is the tuition at UB really that low? 4800 plus 1800 mandatory fee for in state, and out state students could gain NY residency after P1 and pay in state tuition?
it just sounds so good like heaven.

Thats (~$5000) the first year, when you are considered undergraduate. P2, P3, and P4 are considered graduate and you are required to pay graduate tuition which is something around $10,000 a year, which is still cheap 🙂

wow, why it's so low cost, do UB got huge money from Government funding?
it is definitely an important factor when considering which school I will go to.

First it is a public school, second Pharmacy School is together with Pharmaceutical science department which does receive a lot of funding from drug companies.

It sort of is. I was there for undergrad and graduate school and it really is dirt cheap. I'm more interesting in getting into a DO school, but I had to apply there simply because it's so cheap for in-state students. I mean, it's a good school too, but the price for med school is hard to beat.

(especially considering I just had my interview at AZCOM where they said something like >$40K 😱 yikes!)

but before you go all crazy, this tuition break applies to instate residents, out of state residents can add thousands on to that total

after P1, out of state residents can become in state right?
plus even after adding thousands, it is still lower than most of other schools.

it's just too cold there. i hate snow.

im not sure, i have lived in the area all my life.....

the snow adds character... it gets too boring not having 4 seasons. I went to florida recently and went shopping. All their stores were selling shorts and short sleeve shirts and thats really funny around christmas time because it is so ridiculous

So it is ridiculous to sell shorts, even in climates where it doesn't get very cold?

People from New York really do have an egocentric view of the world.

I don't like the snow or the cold... It's terrible, especially last year when we had a snow storm... I was scared. There were trees falling, electric wires everywhere... I hate waking up for school half an hour early... cuz I am scared to drive in the snow...

This was a RAPE, that actually started by the North Campus. Now I am scared...

around christmas time and especially considering that seeing shorts at this time of year is unheard of in the best state in the country. like i give a **** what you think of me anyways. ass.

They sell shorts in a lot of the best states in the country, it just depends on your point of reference.

I wore shorts in Montana at 30 degrees once just because the week before it was 15 below or worse for 5 days straight and 30 just felt warm. Of course I'm a little ridiculous myself on occasion.

Perhaps we can get back on topic and avoid the namecalling. Thx

ok, if I can't travel alone at night? does it mean i better not drive to supermarket to shop after ???PM? or I better not work night shift?
or maybe I better rent a apartment in a good neiborhood?

Yeh, rent an apartment at a good area and north campus has a lot of nice/new campus apartment. That's where i lived when I was there. South campus isn't that bad at all...just don't walk around alone at night. It is very safe during the day. 👍

it is crazy to think what i said would cause such a commotion... I can stay on topic pretty well but if you don't like the fact that I am proud of my hometown that you can just skip my posts... its pretty simple actually.

with that being said, UB South is just a little more uncomfortable at night. However, that is where the dental, medical, and architecture programs are located. The pharmacy school will also be moved there, apparently before i graduate. Leaving the campus grounds at night (south campus that is) you need to be careful. North campus is in a safe and well populated neighborhood. There is everything you need within a 5 mile radius around north campus. Plenty of shopping, restaurants supermarkets and stuff to do.

Weather typically isn't awful, unless you haven't seen snow before. It generally doesn't snow much first semester, once or twice maybe. last year we got a surprise storm in october, as someone else mentioned... That surprise doesn't happen very often at all. Spring semester is a little worse, being that snow really doesn't come and stay until late january lately. But the roads are cleared very quickly for the amount of snow and besides most of the snow happens south of the city. As far as it getting cold, it does. Really cold in february. I guess some people just don't like it. Its all good.

on the plus side, its one of the better pharmacy programs you can find.

on north campus i feel very safe, and south campus is no different but when people say south campus most of the time they are referring to the streets around south campus where all the students go to bars, frats, etc. which ofcourse is at night and is a poor residental neighborhood so ofcourse you should always be with some buddies and not walk into some shady alleys. Though i've never had any problems, but i've heard of problems. And the message that i quoted above, the funny thing is i can see the edge of the lake from my dorm window so this probably happened pretty close to me

UB has a excellent program, high ranking, low tuition--nobody can beat that.
negative: weather, i grew up in the south, not used to driving in big snow, and i cannot image snow is taller than me.
BTW, is parking on campus easy or bad?
Also, safety issue. if I am 6 feet tall with atheletic body build, i would not worry about it. sadly, I am NOT.
but I don't go clubbing at night so I won't need to walk into shady alley at night.

BTW, is buffalo a liberal place or pretty conservative place?

I don't think how big you are really matters when someone has a gun pointed at you. A 3 foot midget with a gun and man rape on his mind would make me cry like a little girl.

parking depends on the day, you should be able to find a spot, but thats as far as it goes, where you find it is the issue. They should give us special passes, but they dont👎.

Buffalo politically speaking is very liberal, which is a shame. Much like the rest of NY, although its not as bleeding heart as NYC is

if i park far away from pharm building on a big snow day, and the class over at 10pm, and i have to walk to my car, and then my car wont start......i'm dead them.

why it's a shame for being liberal? u r conservative?

UB also has a decent "park & ride" shuttle service from the more distant lots. I use that pretty often during the colder months.

Parking is not a problem. Just come a couple of minutes before class and you will be fine. As long as you're on time you're fine. And if you do have to park far you can always take the shuttle to your car or to class.

As a University at Buffalo professional pharmacy student, and former undergrad, I have pertinent insights into campus safety.

The University at Buffalo is one of the safest campuses in the country. Mind you, anywhere you have a daytime population exceeding 40,000 there are bound to be some forms of criminal activity.

I have felt free to walk through south campus and its nearby neighborhoods at all hours of the day, including late at night visiting friends.

I have not personally witnessed any forms of violent criminal activity on either campus....And keep in mind that campus security is provided by the New York State Police....these guys aren't rent-a-cops...they are legit.

Oh....and the snow really isn't an issue...The campus is about 5-8 miles north of the true lake effect snow belt so we get minimal snow compared to areas to the south...I live on campus, and at 8am my walkway is already shoveled and salted and the roads are clear.

I have to say I currently go to Ub and am originally from western NY (suburns) and I now live downtown Buffalo and attend the north campus. Ub campus and Amherst in general is very safe compared to most cities of comparable size. Amherst is more suburban and feels like a town. There are a lot of families as well as college students that live in the area. Amherst and Williamsville are also one of the nicer and safer suburbs in WNY.

I'm a woman and I think no matter where you are and what time of day it is you have to be careful and aware of your surroundings that's just common sense, but having said that I've never felt unsafe at UB. Yes there was a rape that happened on North campus a couple of weeks ago and that wa kind of scary, but it's the first time that this happened on campus in like fifteen years which isn't much considering that there are about 40,000 people on the campus.

Any questions about UB or Buffalo in general I'd be happy to answer. I've grown up here but have lived a lot of other places so I'm pretty unbiased so feel free to ask if you're curous about anything.
