I came across a question today while studying bio for the DAT and it got me worried as to how into detail I should get while studying. I know everyone keeps saying its better to not get stuck in the details of it but would there be as detailed a question like this on the exam:

Pneumothorax may result from a penetrating injury in which air enters the intrapleural space of the thoracic cavity. The presence of air in the intrapleural space increases intrapleural pressure and causes the lungs to collapse. A puncture injury to which area of the body would result in pneumothorax?

A) The ribs
B) The abdominal muscles
C) The external intercostal muscles
D) The parietal pleura

Choice (D) is the correct answer.

These kinds of questions try to test you on application of knowledge. While there probably won't be a question asking about the parietal pleura on the real DAT, there will definitely be questions that are in this format.

I'm more than ready for those apply your knowledge questions! Since anything bio ends up being fair game, I can only hope they don't go into detail about certain subjects that review materials gloss over a bit.

yeah that is a hard question... but just from the pneumo part u can tell its the lungs.. and the partial pleura is the only answer choice that is part of the lungs... but then again I just had a class on it and thats y i know lol!

biology questions were pretty detailed IMO.. youll be fine though! youve put the work in, youll do great..

Would you say that the DAT covered every topic in Kaplan BB and Chad's videos? Or were there a few questions on there that made you go WTF?

I didnt use Kaplan BB: I used Barrons AP biology and Cliffs AP bio.. they were more than enough for the DAT.. Kaplan BB is great resource as well.. so Ive heard.

What about a question like this in the gen chem section:

If an object one meter long expands by 1.5 x 10– 4 m when its temperature is raised from 450 K to 600 K, what is the object's coefficient of linear expansion?

I feel as if that is out of scope considering my professor took 20 minutes to describe this and ended the class without ever speaking of this again

You MOST LIKELY won't see that question, as it's out of the scope of the DAT.

If you suspect you will get a question like that, eat some lucky charms the morning of the exam, and hope for the best.
Im gonna need a big boy breakfast of bacon and a protein shake with nails mixed in for extra toughness so I don't cry during the test.

I recommend just get a happy meal,

Your big boy breakfast seems to be kinda nasty, with nails?! Eww.

And nails don't make you tough, but maybe steroids.

Have you seen the new happy meal box? No way I'm looking at that psychopathic box before I take this test. And by nails I mean iron nails, the kind that Arnold Schwarzenegger would snack on before giving satan a wedgie.

I took my DAT on Tuesday and every one of my biology questions were very straightforward. No tricks. You will be fine. I didn't use those resources though, I used Cliffs AP Bio, which IMO, covers all the information on the DAT.

How in depth do we need to know for plants? Just took a Cliffs biol test and it was really specific. For example; the unfertilized egg is part of a mature embryo sac of flowering plant. Not sure how it compares with the real dat though ><

I have the 2007 DAT but haven't gotten a chance to look at it as of yet. So if you don't get a response anytime soon check it out and look for the plant questions and see how it compares. Here is the link: 2007 Sample DAT

What is a hard question type for QR?
The math problems I find the most difficult are any that ask you to use/find the rates. One such question being:
Pipe A can fill one tub in 2 hours and pipe B can fill one tub in 3 hours. If using both pipe A and B, how long would it take fill one tub?

Geez, what other type of hard QR questions are out there...

I better get studying.....

Those ones aren't bad if you remember the formula - 1/T1 +1/T2 =1/Ttotal So this problem should be 1 hour and 12 minutes.

If you don't mind could you show the math for that?

Any reference to who teaches it best?
Any basic geometry handbook will do it for me. I am not sure how Chad's videos covers it. Khan academy is great for math though so I would check them out.

1/2 +1/3 = 5/6....... 5/6 = 1/T ....... Cross multiply and divide.... T= 6/5 = 1 and 1/5 = 1 hours and 12 min

Can we write on our arms doing the exam for extra surface area for important formulas?

Please don't make fun of me.....

I just started thinking, and this popped up.....
