Just wondering from those who have already taken it. In how much detail do we need to know each biochem pathways? There is alot the decks dont cover. Is it safe to say then it is not important?

Also, how similar are the old tests to the real ndbe?

Thanks for your help.

Hey Future Doctor!,
That is actually to your discretion, know everything if you have time!

Use old exams only as a guide......

I am not so sure about how much is involved, but as to cover the whole NBDE part 1 is just about a full year studying 5 -7 Hrs a day and as to Biochemistry, I know you need to review the subject by the text book first and then review all the old exams since 1990 to update. Correct me if I am wrong. :scared:

You need to have a very wide knowledge of every subject. Yes you need to know all the pathways, but no so much the exact steps, as to whats going on in these pathways. Go through the decks and then the past papers after them to cover up anything the decks didn't have. But the decks is usually enough to score a good mark. As long as your memorize every last word on the back of the cards!

I think to crack the NBDE 1.You should have good knowledge of basics. If you know basics then you could depend on decks. What I did was I used kaplan review notes read them twice. Then I studied decks as many times as possible and solved old exams twice.Noted down my weak points and worked on it.So all together you have to study 5to6 hrs a day initially and in the last month make it 10 hrs of studies. So altogether 3months are enough for preparation of part 1.

thanks for your tips.do you mind telling your score?

For biochem pathways, by far the most important things to know are rate limiting steps, and the enzymes that catalyze the rate limiting steps. Beyond that, I wouldn't worry worry about going into any more details not found in the decks. I'd recommend Lippincott's biochemistry book for the pictures - this book helped me grasp the big picture, and correlate everything found in the decks. If you do use it, don't get bogged down in the details of the book; just use the pictures.
