how did u guys get ur hands on dentistry?
I was trying to find a volunteer job or whatever, but don't know where do start. any help will be appreciated!🙂

Most dentists are cooperative, just walk in, explain that you are
going to apply for Dental school, and ask if he/she would allow
shadowing. I have 3-4 friends who did that and none of the
dentists denied their request. All the best to you.

find your local medicare or free clinic for homeless/low income/ no income. ask to voulenteer, tell them you will do sterilization till you can learn the ropes of assisting.

go become a dental lab technician. I did that while I was in undergrad (would take night classes). It's a two yr course but it is defintely worth it

Remember this!!! All dentist realize they would not be where they are currently if it were not the help of others.

I think it would be rare to find a dentist that says no. Best time is to go when the office is shutting down bec thats when they are most avaliable.

Tell them, like the previous poster said, you want more exposure to the field bec you plan to apply to dental school in X # of years.

Only reason I stick around on SDN is bec last year when I applied many helped me so now its my turn.

We are one big happy dental family 😀

As a follow up. When shadowing dentist, what is the limit that you can do or not do? Obviously you can't act like a dentist since you are not in dental school or licensed.

My aunt was nice enough to let me shadow her. 😀

And her endodontist friend, who happens to be my mom's best friend, allowed me to check her out too. 😀

Too bad Im not getting into dental school this year...I have the experience, but grades sucking + DAT sucking = Im screwed.

First shadow a general dentist, then another, then another. It's interesting to see how different their practices operate. Then you'll have avery good idea of what it about & what to expect. Further, you'll be able to ask loads of questions that you develop along the way.

I have shadowed 2 dentists.... Always call before you shadow. Its polite to do so.

The Pennsylvania Dental Association has a mentor program that hooks up people like you with volunteer dentists that will do anything from let you observe in thier office to taking you to Society meetings. You can also call your local Dental Society and ask the Secretary to give you a list of names. There is no reason why someone can't find a dentist and each of the specialists in your area to let you hang out for a day.

I walked into a dentist's office in town last week and told him what I wanted to do. He actually looked excited to have me follow him around for a while. I told him I wanted to get in about 50 to 100 hours, and he said I was welcome to watch him the entire time.

At first, I thought maybe I'd be better off watching two or three so I could see more procedures, etc. But, this guy is amazing. He doesn't refer anything out. During the last 20 hours I've seen, fillings, root canals, extractions, implants (I actually got to help on these), dentures, bridges, crowns, skin grafts, bone grafts, wisdom teeth extractions, partials, a cancer diagnosis, braces, retainers and tons of other things. I said to him, I thought you had to specialize to much of what you do. He said, "Dentists do as much as they feel comfortable doing. Many of them don't want the stress of doing root canals or extracting wisdom teeth, so they refer them out. But I love dentistry, so I try to do as much as I can."

Needless to say, the guy is extremely busy. He doesn't work any short days, and he never takes a lunch. I asked him about burn-out, and he said he'd slow down when he thought he was doing too much. But as for now, he just closed on some land to build a new bigger office with 12 operatories (he currently has only 6). They guy is rolling in money, and he is extremely happy.

I'll probably spend the rest of my shadowing experience here, but I may visit one or two more dentisits just to get a feel how other dentists choose to run their practice, because from what I can tell the dentist I'm shawdowing does a lot more than the average guy. In fact, I like it so much, that I'm going to try and model my practice in a similar way. So much for specialty school, I'd be happier doing a little bit of everything like this guy does.
