This question goes out to everybody who applied, got multiple acceptances, and had to choose one school... when you were deciding which school to attend, which factors came into play the most? How do you feel about using those factors to guide you now that you are in the school?

I think this info would be helpful to all of us interviewing right now so that we can ask med students more specific questions and form better judgements about the schools we visit.

had my dog pick it out of a hat...

Family friendliness (school)
Family freindliness (city)
Cost of living (city)
Cost of living (school)
Reputation (based on doctors my wife and I know in Austin)

usnews ranking

Do you have to make everything a joke?

I picked my school based on the single most important factor: residency reconstitution prevelance indicators [RRPI]. After you find out the calculation for your school, pick the school which clearly minimizes the RRPI - there is no better measure of the quality of a school. If you want to know the RRPI rate dynamic over the coming years - simply divide the RRPI by the duration*period in question.

Hope that Helps

Is that the attitude you are going to bring to your patients? Please, consider making a LITTLE room for compassion in your life. It may help someone a LOT.

Combination of stuff.....

1) US News Ranking (I wouldn't leave the south unless it was a good school)
2) Facilities......There are some great schools with shady facilities
3) How friendly the school administration seemed
4) Educational philosophy of the school
5) Town ( I wanted to see what a college town is like)
6) How awesome my student interviewer was.
7) Family (I have relatives in the area)

That's about all. I didn't write out my decision calculus before, but it just came down to gut feeling, and those were some factors.

close to home/friends/family
laid back lifestyle/nice location
not too cold
happy seeming students
school that didn't have class all day every day
u.s. news rankings
residency placements
cost
opportunity for early clinical experiences
humanistic approach to medicine

i am very very happy i used these factors to decide what school to go to. my quality of life is much better at uci than it would be at a lot of other schools. and i'm all about quality of life/being happy !
