Im starting med school in the fall, in a city that I only visited once (during my interview), and I dont know how to go about finding a roommate. I have a friend thats also going to the school but I dont want to room with a close friend just because I dont want roommate issues to lead to friendship issues (incase that happens). Theres a facebook group but Im not sure how to go about selecting the right roommate in a group full of people I dont know yet.

I lived on my own for my first yr until I got to know my classmates and then roomed with some of them. Or you could use craigslist.

My class fb group had a google doc where you could enter your info and housing preferences and then see everyone else's as well. I was going to email a bunch of people until my current roommates contacted me first lol. Worked out really well. Alternatively, you could just room with your friend since it would be less work than finding new people. The only way you'd have roommate issues is if you let them happen, so just don't let them happen.

im renting my own 1br place for the first year , gonna throw dank partayz. are you sure you want a med school roommate.. seems like it'd be tough to have a off switch from school if someone else is studying or freaking out or whatever

I was assigned a roommate at my school.

I went with a 1 BR apartment for 1st year with a fantastic view (penthouse baby!) and then moved into a great 2br 2bath townhouse very close to the school and hospital with another classmate for the last 3 years. We looked into renting a mansion about 15 miles out, but it still would have been expensive and they wanted a massive deposit that I wasn't willing to make and my 4 potential housemates couldn't really afford. (~$25k) I should have done it. It would have been a fun experience. It was a large stone farmhouse on many acres on a hill overlooking a majestic valley, mountains, lake, the whole enchilada. It was quite a place. The rent was 6k a month 20 years ago. I'd consider retiring to a place like that. Majestic views, privacy, convenient to a major medical center. No ocean view though. 🙁

I lived alone first year, then lived with a classmate years 2-4. It worked out well for me. I think that first year lets you see real personalities (vs. the accepted students group, second look or orientation) and figure out who might be a compatible roommate.

Craigslist. If you use it correctly and smartly, it's a great resource. She was a fellow incoming MS1, but the rent and utilities just ended up being more than I really wanted to spend. Thankfully, we're great friends though. I am moving in with a fellow classmate/friend for the next year. I would love to live alone, but the cost is just too much.

If your med school is affiliated with a uni, there is probably a facebook for all students looking for off campus housing. I'm probably going to room with a 4yr math PhD student.

The med students I talked to had $tandard$ that were too high ($1K) when the city I'll be in has cheap rent in nice enough areas (I'll be paying $520 for rent and utilities). Non-med students seem a little more flexible

definitely don't do what I did and room with the first person who messaged me from our class's facebook group. i suggest a 1br as well
Did your roommate end up being someone lame? I'm sorry if they were. I'm lucky in that my 2 roommates are super awesome.
