Im going to be rejecting an admission acceptance for which I gave a deposit several months ago. I wanna do this in the most respectful and polite way, so I was wondering if anyone has any advice as to how to go about doing this?

Thanks for your help!🙂

I first apologized for the late notice, and then thanked them for the opportunity to join their incoming class. I mentioned that I was impressed by their program however I felt I fit better at an alternate school. It was something along those lines.

Just call the school and be polite when you do it. Remember - they probably get this at least a few times a year, so they're used to it and know its all part of the process. Do it as soon as you can though so they can call the next person anxiously waiting on the waitlist.

can we do this by email?

I really really dont want to call.... I am so guilt ridden that I just dont think I can do it in a phone call.

Don't be guilt ridden! There are plenty of people waiting to get spots, so think of it as being altruistic for other people! The schools aren't going take any offense!

I guess you can do it either way, it's totally up to you. But it's better to call them to make sure the admission gets it and knows it right away.

Thanks for all your responses. I was wondering if, when you called, you spoke to the dean or did you just speak to any admissions representative?

Thanks again!

I wish there was a place on AADSAS that you could simply check "OFFER REJECTED". That would make me happy, especially for all the schools that rejected me.

i think any admissions representative should be fine.

has anyone actually just called and told the secretary that answers the phone that they are giving up their seat?

I just sent a very polite rejection email. I mean they send us those polite emails or snail mail letters rejecting us! No need to talk to them about rejecting their offer if they don't call to reject us.

I responded via phone call to each of the schools. However, if they notify you of acceptance via email, I guess I could see doing it that way. Phone gives you the confirmation asap though and is a little more mature.

I spoke with the head of the admissions office each time, which generally was a secretary.

I would definitely call instead of email....I sort of liken it to a break-up
(altho i probably wouldnt go in to the school to talk to them in person lol)

If I may, which school are you rejecting? I'm one of those waitlistees hoping to swoop in on some scraps:laugh:
