How difficult/competitive is it for pathology residencies?

I'm a 3rd year DO student thinking about path and wondering if I am competitive enough. I cant find much info about the stats anywhere else on the web. I got a 226 on step 1 and basically an average student with no research background. Can anyone give me some stats or refer me to a website. Thanks

Do you have a pulse? If so, I think you will match somewhere.

Some info is available at the NRMP website, particularly the Charting Outcomes In The Match reports.

I know this isn't really an "advice" post, but I figure I'd give my 2cents. I'm a 4th year DO student with the same research background (lack thereof) and pretty comparable Step 1 scores (my USMLE score was higher than COMLEX for both Step 1 and Step 2). I applied to 21 programs, got 19 interviews and 2 rejections, so I feel like I'm at least a competitive candidate for the types of programs to which I was applying. I kind of restricted myself geographically (upper midwest/east central), so I don't know how I would have done if I had applied more broadly. I felt pretty equal to the other applicants I've met so far on the interview trail. Just make sure you do a path rotation or two before you start interviewing and you'll be fine.

As for stats and stuff, the Charting Outcomes site that Parts Unknown posted is what I used to gauge myself. You can also go to the AAMC's Careers in Medicine website, and if you have a login through your school they have some stats on there as well for all major specialties in medicine.

Pathology is generally not competitive.

If you seem pleasant at your interviews and interview at more than a few places, I would say you have 100% chance of matching; you could possibly end up at a top tier institutition. However if you restrict youself to one or two programs then you might be in jeoprady of not matching no matter what your stats are.

Also if you can financially swing it, definitely do some away rotations at big named places to get some letters of rec, plus you get a taste of different styles of programs.
