How difficult is it to get a job at a Hospital or with an orthopedic group?

I've searched in prior threads regarding salaries and it looks like working as an associate is a big no no. I just want to know how difficult it is to land a job right after your 3rd year in residency at a Hospital with a salary of 200k +? Thank you.

Very difficult. There is no data for your question. Anecdotally, there are probably 50 or so of these positions every year. Complete guess, maybe there are more. With the growing popularity of fellowship training, it makes it more difficult for someone coming out of a 3 year residency to get these positions. It still happens! It’s impossible to predict how many of these positions will exist in 5-10 years. There will probably be more hospital based positions. The salary question is impossible to answer. It seems like 200,000 is close to what most hospital based starting pods will get to start, but some make more and some make less.

From talking to practicing pods and recent grads etc it seems that ortho group is very difficult to land due to the fact that these group tends to want you to take general ortho calls too. So you might be the F/A guy but you can't help lessen the call burden if you're exclusively doing F/A. The group around my area all take calls whether they're joints, F/A or hands etc.

It sucks cause there's so many ortho F/A jobs out there. But all of them, at least in my area all want strictly ortho trained.

How does one even apply to these positions at hospitals? Because I was doing a brief job search via different hospital job portals and there are 0 podiatry hospital jobs available from what I found. My main concern I guess is that I just want to be paid fairly for all the time and money I plan to spend going the podiatry route of medicine. I would say 150k base pay would be a fair starting salary, is this realistic?

There are no absolutes for anything >7 years down the road. Podiatrist as a whole could be averaging more or less down the road. If you do well in school you can make an argument for that salary or greater if you were to complete residency in 2020. You should think about retaking the MCAT and aiming for a 510+ and being able to all but guarantee that as an MD specialist. Then again, we don't know where medicine in general will be that many years out either. We can only speculate.
