How difficult is it to get into USF as an out-of-state app? Is it a good school?

I have two very close friends in Tampa so I was considering applying to USF next year. Do I need to have a 45 MCAT and a 4.0 to get into USF as an OOS applicant ? Is USF considered a good school in FL ?

I am not sure about the stats needed to get into USF as OOS however, I am from FL and yes USF is a very good school. It might not be in the top 10 but I think it kicks a**. Not only that but UCF is grabbing up some of the people from USF for the new med school there, so I must not be the only one who thinks they have a good thing at USF. Also, I have known a handful of docs that have gone there from way back to someone that is there now and they are wonderful docs, and great people. Good luck I say give it a shot for sure!!!

No. But, do consider the fact that it is a public, state-funded school. Therefore, expect to face a class that is comprised of greater than 95% in-staters. I'd say you need to be fairly competitive to even stand a chance.

I wouldn't say USF is a good school. Especially it's undergraduate, but it's medical school isn't stellar by any means either.

It definitely has some difficulties getting in for two reasons: 1) They have a 7 year honors program with the undergraduate school, so a few seats are reserved for them. 2) They have a medical master's program which they use as a route to acceptance.

Also, I would be cautious about going to any public school in Florida. The budget was cut last year by the Florida Government and the schools are suffering, and due to the last vote in the primaries, the budget for schools are going to get cut further. All of USF is on a hiring freeze, so no new faculty can be negotiated, and certainly giving out raises is going to be tough, so expect the good faculty to go where they're paid what they deserve.

Finally, in the spirit of full disclosure, this is who I am:
37 MCAT,
3.9 GPA
B.S. in Microbiology from USF
M.S. in Chemistry from USF
They lost my application the first time through in 2006 and told me about it missing a week before the due date for the secondary. This time I applied early and a month later, after trying a dozen times to call/email them finally went there to talk in person and my application hadn't been processed because I "didn't have a recommendation from a science faculty" when in reality I had four. They didn't want to accept them because they didn't teach me in a formal class. So they don't take the word from their own professors whom I worked every day since 2004. They would rather have a professor who didn't realize I was one student out of the three hundred they have. On the other hand they felt bad when I told them they made a mistake because one of my letters of recommendation was from a professor who taught me Genetic Engineering.

Anyway, best of luck, Tampa is a very cool city in my opinion. I just don't like USF anymore.

Peace, and if you disagree with me, don't attack me because I attacked your school...just spout off on the great things about USF...

If it sucks so bad, why did you apply twice?

It was a backup school, something that should have been as easy as when I got in for undergrad (ie I got out of English class, sat in a chair for two seconds and then they offered me money to go there).

But to be fair, I didn't say it was academically poor. I wouldn't know that much. I do know the average of their students aren't amazing. I have had one class with a medical professor and due to my background in chemistry was able to point out a problem with one of the structures he was showing for some drug (pharmacology class) and he told me that he knew about it but knew none of the medical students cared enough to notice it and had never commented on it. So that says something, but again, if you don't want to believe it you don't have to.

What I did comment about was its budget, which as of last June, I wasn't aware that Florida was in such dire condition. Turns out they were, so much so that there's a University wide hiring freeze, decreased library hours, decreased campus security (by the way, at its worse they had two cops for the entire campus, which at that time had over 20,000 students, faculty and staff) Add on that just a few weeks ago they voted "Yes on Amendment One" which effectively cuts the goverment's budget by giving tax breaks. So Florida, being what it is (48th in Education), will cut budget to education.

someone sounds a little bitter because he didn't get into his backup twice...

your med school acceptance is a privilege, not an entitlement. Don't act like such an arrogant prick

dcohen, easy with the name calling. unless you faced the same difficulties with admissions at usf, attended usf as an undergrad, or are knowledgeable about fl budget issues I would advise you to be a bit more constructive in your criticisms. everyone has what they believe is a safety school even though it may be a false assumption.

What did I say about attacking me in my first post?
and yet you have nothing good to say about USF...

by the way, meet someone for a bit before you pass judgement on them...it might help in the long run. But I'm sure you're an excellent person with no downsides or flaws, like most pre-medical students.

God Bless,

This is a bit uncalled for. Rotinaj stated his opinion (based upon experiences and his knowledge on state issues) about the school, and invited anyone else to disagree with him. Attacking him, however, is unnecessary.
