I've heard of students transferring from one school to another before, but how difficult is it?.....I have family issue back in Florida and currently about to finish my first year of optometry school.....I would like to continue my 2nd year of optometry school, but would also like to spend time with a family member of mine who is having very serious health issues 🙁 I don't want to take a leave of absents, but I don't want to be away from my family either, it is a very difficult position that I'm in.....has anyone on this forum transfer before, and how hard was it for you to.... thank you -nguyenless

We are probably not the one to answer that question. I would contact Nova and ask them. Fran is REALLY nice and helpful. More than likely, at nova you'll have to start over.

From what I understand from friends who have been down that road, because the classes and curriculum can be so different school to school you may have to start over.sorry

Yes, it is difficult to transfer between optometry schools, but it's not unheard of. Considering your personal reason for wanting the transfer, if your G.P.A. is strong, I would not suppose the situation is impossible. Consult with your school's office of student affairs, as well as that of the college to which you'd like to move — act fast, though, as this type of thing well might need some time, and it's already very near the end of the academic year.

Good luck.

Nova is surprisingly accepting of transfer students. We had a student transfer in between first and second year and this student will be graduating on time with the rest of us in 1 month.

You may end up having to repeat a year because as another poster suggested, curriculum are usually different enough that you can't just slide right in.

Rather than paying an extra year's tuition or trying to go to school and deal with a sick family member, a better alternative might simply be a one year leave of absence from your current school and just returning there in one year's time.
