How difficult is landing an ER residency?

Just a quick question. I was curious how competitive it is to land an ER residency. Is published research essential? What board scores are typically required? I am just beginning medical school this fall and I want to do everything possible to be competitive when it comes time to applying for residencies. Any thoughts? Thanks.
