How difficult is pharmacy school?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
really?? how much study time did that give you...please share more info

I work slightly less than that - more like 24 hr/wk.

I don't study much outside of class. but that has been discussed more on the pharmacy student forum.

I work at the hospital. I used to be very, very busy at work. Now that we've hired more techs I work more in a pharmacist capacity and have more time to study or research personal interest topics.

thats amazing- how do you not have to study outside of the classroom- I would like to know how you do that!!

I don't care that I don't get straight As.

I go to class and take notes there. A lot sticks because I pay attention.

I work in a hospital so I use a lot of the stuff we learn in therapeutics regularly.

Of course there is the other extreme too...the people who study every waking hour and barely pass. I think I would pick an easier career choice if I were like that. I mean it's gotta suck to do nothing except eat, sleep, and study, and then just barely get by.

Hell yeah, I felt like that my last semester. I felt so stupid...

It really depends on the program, instructor, and you personally for how much you have to study. There are going to be some classes that you won't have to study for very much and others that seem to occupy all of your time and have you grinding your teeth at night. But I wouldn't trade this for anything. I love the fact that I will be a pharmacist and able to help people with my knowledge to live healthier lives and manage their diseases more effectively.

I have 2 years retail experience...do you recommend working in a hospital instead because you get more hands on experience?? thanks

it depends on what you want to do.

Many people do just fine working in retail. If you'd like to work in a hospital later I'd recommend getting a job there but it isn't necessary to succeed in school. We all see different things at our works - I'm admittedly clueless on some things that my classmates who work retail don't have to think twice about.

Success in pharmacy school comes down to many variables. Work experience is only one of them.

I don't know, really. I went through all four years with ADD-inattentive. Recently diagnosed, it's like a different universe on Adderall. I can read a paper without stopping now. Back when I was actually in school, I'd spend a few hours studying, but 75% of that would be daydreaming about exceedingly arbitrary subjects. I remember one day I wasted an hour daydreaming about being a pirate. I seriously wish I was joking. I made it through fine grades wise - always had a 70% or better in everything - but I was held back due to forgetting to take a test I needed to make up and the professor thought I was usurping his authority. I seriously did just forget about it...but the school would have none of it and they threw the book at me. (I soon found that they would further enjoy doing that several more times....long story....I don't think they like me much, honestly... 🙁 )

That said, you can work as many hours as you can handle....and for some people that is realistically over 30 hours. I don't really have a life so it was rather easy for me to pull off.

haha you are funny...thanks for the info (I sent you a pm) I hope that I can still intern just a few hours a week-if I can do more that would be awesome!

1. pharmacy school is hard. its time consuming, you will have no free time except maybe on the weekend, but you know what... you learn a lot, and its fun because you want to learn what you are learning.
2. you need to pass. a 2.0 is required, or you get the boot. whoever said something as obscure as 0.7 is off his rocker.
3. i actually go to class instead of watching online lectures bc i am too distracted at home. facebook is a click away. i have a 3.11 gpa in pharm school now, and had a 3.49 cum gpa getting in, and a 2.99 pre-pharmGPA.

overall,
its fun, its hard, its worth it.

Well, I did not have much trouble with the classes, but it is significantly more time consuming than undergrad as the amount of material is about 4-6 times as much per class..

Wow, what pharmacy school did you go to? I wish I could have went to your school. Nobody at my school would agree it was not that bad. It was difficult and challenging, and we are all glad it is over with. I guess some schools are easier than others
