I am inquiring this because what if lets say an Englishman completed his BMBS in the British system and decided to catch up with the technology and surgical techniques mostly developing in the US, therefore he would have to practice there. My question is what are the procedures nowadays as apposed to 20/30 years ago ?

For example, someone has graduates with a Bachelors Degree of Medicine and a Bachelors of Surgery (BMBS) and wanted to specialize in America. What must be done in order to do this.

I am thankful to all responses.

It's MBBS. Further more, its a difficult process, you'd either have to re-do medical school here and or pass the USMLE.

You have to pass all of the steps of the USMLE, and you have to do a complete residency in the US in order to practice here.

I know quite a few UK doctors who took the USMLE steps while obtaining their MBBS at a UK medical school. It saved them from having to relearn information (especially for step 1) down the road.

See www.ecfmg.org for more information on becoming certified in the US. Many IMG(international medical graduates) do residencies and fellowships in the US before returning to their home countires or continuing on to practice in the US.

Thankyou i will revise it thoroughly

That sounds very logical Raziela, can you corroborate when they did this? Was it in the past 4 years?

And following from the note that if all the USMLE steps were to be completed by the time you graduated with a BMBS, would you be equally considered to a US resident since you would both have an "MD" or equivalency.

Most of them finished medical school 10-15 years ago. Sorry 🙁

I'm afraid I don't know more than that and you should definitely check out the international forums on SDN if you haven't already:

Good luck 🙂
