Last week, I was accepted to a medical school. I sent in my notice to hold my acceptance (they didn't require a deposit). Today, however, I was accepted into another medical school. This school requires that I either send in $100 deposit, or withdraw. I'm not sure which school to go to right now. So, can I send in the $100 deposit to this second school, or would this mean that I lose my seat at the other school? Not sure how this works.

In most cases you can hold your seat at an unlimited number of schools up until May 15.

This is sort of helpful.

I just want to be clear, at this stage, me sending a deposit to this second school will not lead to me losing my spot at the first school?

Correctomundo my friend. You can hold as many acceptances as you want up until May 15th (for a majority of the schools). On that day you will have to choose which one of your multiple acceptances you'd like to keep; the rest will have to be released, only to end up in the depths of waitlist hell.

The Dean at Cinci made it sound like schools know how many (possibly which) acceptances you are holding. Is that true?

If I recall correctly the schools are able to determine this much later in the cycle (for some reason, March 15th is coming to mind, but May 15th is a much more logical choice).

I see. Well he made a comment about holding spots and how it may help you with scholarships. I assumed he meant that you might get offered more scholarships/scholarship amounts if schools see that you have multiple acceptances.

The dean at Miami said the same thing. He said that they know how many schools you've been accepted to, which schools you've been accepted to, and the scholarship awards (if any) that each school has given you 😱. He said that med school deans are a close-knit group.

EDIT: @above post: The dean of Miami also said the same thing about how holding multiple acceptances can lead to increased scholarship awards.

In March, all your schools will be able to see how many acceptances you are holding and where. I don't think they can see scholarship info as that is outside of amcas. That's what a med student tour guide told us at a school I interviewed with.

I don't think that happens until February, but I could be wrong.
