I was reading through some med schools' descriptions of how they evaluate applicants and many mention maturity as a trait that they look for. Is this something that comes primarily out of interviews? I even see it listed from schools who have mostly sub-23 matriculants so it doesn't seem like it has anything to do with actual age. Thanks.

It comes through loud and clear in essays and interviews, and it's a combination of judgment, poise, appropriateness of social interaction, and overall bearing. It's hard to define precisely, but to borrow a phrase from the great Justice Potter Stewart, "I know it when I see it."

I have a particular set of questions I ask at interviews of the youngest interviewees (< 24). For me, this is a very good assessor of maturity. No, I'm not sharing.
