I might need to take some summer classes related to my major in order to graduate on time (not pre reqs). I've heard adcoms look negatively towards summer courses as they are seen as easier

same amount of material in less time, how is that easier?

Depends on the Faculty member and the course. If its a non prerequisite, I consider it as a regular class. If it is Orgo or an upper level pre req I weigh it less.i would prefer to see how the student performs in challenging classes with a full course load. Over the summer, that class is your only concern and you can give it complete and undivided attention.

As a non science major, I had to take gen chem (with labs) and calculus over summer and received 5 MD II this cycle.

If you take summer coursework at your own university, or one of comparable difficulty, does not matter. Even if you take them at a less prestigious university, and it is only one or two courses over your college career, does not matter. If someone took a good number of courses at a much less competitive school, I would certainly look for a reason (ie living at home to attend to a family emergency, financial need to take some credits somewhere less expensive). Summer courses can certainly be very challenging given the compressed nature, especially if one is keeping active in research, and/or with EC's. But they also can be very rewarding in that many times, the small class size promotes more interaction with professors and other students.

Were you ever asked about why you took those classes over the summer?

Did you take the summer classes at your home institution?

No I wasn't ever asked that and yes they were at my home institution. Keep in mind with those gen chem lectures, labs and calculus class that I was still considered s full-time time student. Maybe that's why in addition to me being a non traditional applicant I was never asked?

@Goro @gonnif @Catalystik How do you view online courses taken on summer? Not pre req or science, just general humanities
Opinions will vary by adcomm and by institution. From my perspective, several non-prerequisite online classes scattered over the college years wouldn't bother me. More is fine in special circumstances, like active military.

Bias against distance learning has historically been strong, but attitudes are changing. Very slowly.
