I wanted to know how to pick a major in college. I am somewhat decent and could improve my study habits in school. So far, i have an Associate in Arts general degree from Mesa Community College. I have the AGEC to get into ASU. I wanted to know what would be the a good major for me to pick. I am trying to get involved in something like General Biology with no concentration or Microbiology. I would think the labs for microbiology would be difficult. I want to get into midwestern in glendale, az or U of A in Tucson. I am also interested in going to new mexico as well. I want to get into pharmacy, the only problem is, is that I take medication for my mind. I want to try a lower dose of medication to be able to study in school. I just would like to think what would be easier for me to take in college in order to get into Pharm school?

1) Involving major, the rule of thumb is to major in something you enjoy while fulfilling your pre-reqs. I cannot tell you how hard the labs are at ASU. However, there are several posters who have or are currently attending ASU so they should better answer your question.
2) For AU or MWU, the best advice is do the best you can do GPA and PCATwise while getting some pharmacy experience. It also doesn't hurt to talk to admissions at each school to see what they are looking for in an applicant.
3) I always advise student to becareful with UNM. You can apply but don't put all your hope on it. Out of a class of 90 they maybe have 9 OOS students. These students often have state ties as well.
4) I cannot and refuse to advise you on this. You will have to talk about this with your doctor and not an internet forum.

1) You need to see an adviser. Because of your mental status, you may be eligible for a disability resources adviser. Trust me when I say that the health professions advisers are essentially useless. They have way too many students to manage and they are not up to date with all of the requirements for pharmacy schools - they mostly focus on medicine.

2) You are going to have to improve your study habits hardcore. The chemistry labs and physics labs are intense and a whole lot of work for just one credit. Be prepared to spend an incredible amount on lab reports with lazy, incompetent group partners (not ALL will be like this, but remember not everyone gets into med/pharm school).

3) You need to figure out a schedule that is manageable. Balance your schedule with a lab, some gen ed requirements, and a class or two for your major. For MWG and UA, completing your labs at the University isn't essential, but strongly preferred.

4) The major itself doesn't matter. In my class we have Psych majors, Nutrition majors, poli sci, engineering, and many more. If you have trouble maintaining focus studying or if it takes you longer to learn something because of your psych meds, then you are probably going to want to pick an "easier" major. Therefore, stay away from biochemistry, microbiology, and psychology, all of which are strong programs at ASU. You could go for some other social science (sociology), communications, or a general biology degree. Either way, you really need to get in to see an adviser, ASAP, and IMO you might want to disclose your issue to the school because you may be eligible for additional resources... just saying.

5) The bonus of picking the "harder" majors is that you could get into a research lab much easier, which is a great experience and adds to your application. Furthermore, once you are in pharmacy school, if you are planning on joining a research lab at UA, the PIs seem to prefer students who have at least SOME experience in a lab, even if it is minimal. But, being a part of a research lab is not essential to the application. It would be beneficial if you are not as strong in other areas.

6) Unless you are an URM and/or a strong applicant, UNM is probably a no go. Seriously. Although, they do prefer students from bordering states before all other states.

7) Join the pre pharmacy club. They will have practice PCATs and mock interviewing throughout the year. You should be active in EC's. UofA likes that.

I think you have written to me in the past. I just would like to thank you for giving me some good advice. I will pick general biology to get into pharm school. I am going to try to get a lower dose of medication to get in the program. Thank you for helping me.
