i got hired as a writer for my local newspaper's science website and wanted to know how I would classify this. It is unpaid, so would it be appropriate under non-clinical volunteering, employment, or hobby?

Again it is unpaid. I do it because I like writing about science (this makes it seem like a hobby) but I actually have a title, so I was considering volunteering or employment maybe

If you're not being paid then your are volunteering, IMO. But you said you were "hired". Is this some kind of internship?

Depending on what you write about, Teaching or Artistic Endeavor are two other potential categories.

Put it as hobby or employment if you are getting paid

You could call it "other" and highlight that you were a volunteer, selected (hired) for your skills as a writer who translates scientific discoveries into columns that make science understandable to the lay public. It sounds like a great gig that could get lost under "volunteer, non-clinical".
