I have a list of schools that I am considering, I want to eliminate the more competitive schools. How do I find out which schools are less competitive? do I look at average mcat, or what?

Make sure you look at out-of-state acceptance rates for certain state schools! Some schools are very competitive for OOS students and probably not worth applying even if your stats match up with their averages.

Average MCAT/GPA for matriculants is a good place to start. Another statistic to look at might be number of accepted people vs. number of applicants, but that can be misleading.

I actually think this is the most important consideration in selecting schools. I didn't even apply to schools with absurd numbers of applicants (GW, Temple, Tulane, etc). What Nick was referring to is the fact that some schools don't accept out-of-state applicants or are aimed at a certain demographic (such as historically black schools). Obviously make sure none of the schools on your list have a special focus. I would much sooner cut a school with 10,000 applicants than a school with a slightly higher GPA/MCAT.
