How do I go about resigning from my graduate assistantship position suddenly? I have to do this tomorrow..do I write a letter of resignation and say I will stay on for 2 weeks...or ask them if they want me to stay on for 2 more weeks..whats the deal...and do I have to stay on for 2 weeks? anyone expericen this before?

Are you a current applicant for schools?

Check the contract that you signed or the handbook. It normally states how much time you have give before you resign.

Sorry I can't help. But, man, what I would give to be in your shoes...🙂

I too would suggest you look over any paperwork you received when you started. It should have it in there as to what you need to do. If not stated, I guess the minimum would be 2 weeks, but they might not be able to replace you so soon, so they may not be happy about that. Why are you quitting? Just curious.

There are several factors you should consider when you approach your advisor or department. As others have said consult your contract or graduate handbook. Other factors: are you doing research and/or teaching? If you are doing research, how are you being funded? Are you named in the research grant? Is there someone who can easily take over your research? Do you have to leave in two weeks or can you help train the person who will continue your work?

Just some thoughts...Good luck.

By the way, if you are going to ask for a recommendation, you probably should not create any resentment towards you because of the method that you chose in order to resign.
