I have a low GPA 3.01 at my school and I would really like to get my AEGD-1, what can I do at my current situation to make myself more competitive? I have good standing with my faculty and attendings that can write LORs and some were previous military dentist. I am also prior enlisted with good record AAM, AGCM, Air Assault and I am trying to do my best to get more clinic exposure. I know what is done is done but anything else I can do? I am getting good grades currently in my spring semester.

For school extra curriculum activity I am currently doing or have done

1. Volunteer at Non-profit extraction clinic (30 hour), (extracted about 31 teeth so far)
2. Volunteer at Kid's clinic ( 10 hour), (SSC, typical restorative work)
3. Presented my Endo research at IADR

Like everything in the military, as you know, being prior service, there is no logic to be had.

One of the most talented oral surgeons that we have in the army who is now a fellowship trained program director was accepted straight into oral surgery residency at a dental school, but somehow was rejected from the 1yr AEGD - one of only a handful of people rejected his year.

It’s not super competitive, but how they select people is beyond me…

Getting a letter of recommendation from an army dentist and having a very strong personal statement are probably your best bets.

GPA is important, but it isn't everything. Class ranking matters more because you are competing against your peers. Do you show an upward trend? Can you explain any valid reason for your perceived lower GPA? Can the writers for your LORs state how you are didactically and clinically compared to your classmates, and speak on your character, patient care, and demonstrated leadership/service? How will you be able to contribute to the military as an Officer & a dentist?
