Position Wanted How do I switch from a PGY-1 prelim spot to full on categorical IM residency?

Hello everyone! I am an incoming PGY1 preliminary year who was unfortunately unable to match into a advanced program for neurology. However, I feel that I was beginning to fall out of love with Neurology and wanted to know how I could approach the topic with my PD regarding attempting to continue on as a categorical resident. If I can't do it at the same institution, when and how should i approach the possiblity of going elsewhere for a PGY2 position at other institution should that happen? Do I use FREIDA, or residency swap to secure vacancies? Do I ask my PD for help doing it? It's really something my school hasn't been very helpful with so I'm just trying to learn more from people who may have taken this path in the past
