Hi all,

I was just wondering, what is the grading system for medical schools? I heard a passing grade is basically a 90% 😱 Anybody have any idea?

In general, a C is the passing grade in med schools. Most schools are pass fail (many with multiple subdivisions -- high pass, low pass, honors etc), a handful are letter grades. Even if a school is P/F the majority of schools will rank you anyhow, so the competition exists. One or two have P/F and no ranking but that is a rarity.

Just as Law2Doc said, C is considered passing, but as he stated there is some form of ranking. The mean in some of the med classes can be pretty high. Our med school's statistics course had exam means ranging from 84-92%. While general pathology was around an 85%. When I took those courses, we did not have a curve.

Can't imagine what it is like at a graded school though. The vet students here are on a letter grade scale, and they are cutthroat!

Someone is just a tad bitter😉. But at least the rest of us care enough to respond constructively to the OP🙂

What does OP stand for? I have never understood this.

I am not so sure about that. It depends on schools, but I don't think a passing grade normally correlates with a C. I think it is some numerical bar set by each class/med. school.

Ranking (along with USMLE scores) play a role in residency, letters of recommendation, and research fellowships.

Yea prolly depends on the school too, but on my end it appears to be a C. But most people get above a C anyway so doesn't really matter😉.
