How do medical schools benefit from having early decision program?

I know that EDP puts the applicants at disadvantage. But how does EDP benefit the school? What are they looking for in the EDP applicants?

People who fit their mold are locked into their program instead of another program

Most schools I looked into accept only 5-10 out of the EDP. Would that really make a significant contribution to filling their classes?

Also, I wouldn't say EDP puts applicants at a disadvantage... if an applicant knows how to use EDP effectively, it can be a huge advantage.

I guess what I meant was that EDP puts applicants at a HUGE disadvantage if they are rejected.
