Usually one of two ways: browsing all of the threads or we are notified of possible problems when guests report a bad post using the "Report Bad Post" feature.

The "report bad post" feature is the kicker for me. It isn't possible to read all the posts (or even open all of the threads!), so this feature comes in handy.

I cant believe people actually use the "report bad post" feature.

Kinda silly.

I'm more interested in how moderators (i.e. Gavin) actually have the time while in dental school to perform moderation duties. Being married, having kids, and school seems like quite a bit without putting in a couple hours a day on SDN. How do you find the time?

Survey says,

Being a SDN moderator is the second biggest cause of marrage divorce. The top cause is being kicked by a moderator and then becoming psycho.

Watch out, Gavin.

I still think its silly. How uptight do you have to be to actually report someone? Is it that big of a deal if someone runs their mouth on a message board? Its a message board for cryin out loud, if it actually bugs people that much, just dont read it or move on to another thread.

Its not worth my time to report someone because they said something naughty. I have better things to do, like click on another topic.

People need to just chill and not take everything so seriously, there are millions of more important things in life to worry about than the nonsense that is dished out by Vertical Bite and Co.

Since we all are/are about to become professionals, we should act like it, and we like people to treat us the same way we treat them, that is with respect. There is no need to insult others and calling them names just because they happen to have a different openion than yours

Here, I would like ask you one questions. Would you like to be insulted or called several names? I am sure not, and if you have had that done to you for no reason, you would report it.

I mean in real life, I don't report to anyone, I deal with these people differently and they might have to report themselves to the closest hospital 😉

The reason people probably report is that when you are asking a legitimate questions, and someone hijacks the forums with stupidity, it is really annoying, a flame war starts and a good thread gets shut down. I always feel sorry for the original person who really had an important question to ask.

I agree there are more important things in life, but the purpose of this forum is to have a healthy pre-dental discussion, to discuss issues/questions/ comments etc... ONce the flame war starts, I'll admit it can be entertaining, but people who had real issues to discuss always lose out. The regulars on this forum have no quams about posting the topic again, but if you are a newbie, and you get treated like crap the first time you post a question, then we will lose those people right away, and the integrity of the forum goes down because it will be filled with threads full of flame wars.

I think moderators do a great job on this forum keeping the trash out! If you want to be stupid, go start you own forum or go to the doctors lounge even

I completely agree that we should act like professionals. Im not defending those that are rude, insulting, and useless. There is never a good excuse to act in that manner towards others. With that said, if someone called me a name or insulted me, I would either dish it back out or ignore it. What would reporting do? Get them banned? That wont keep them from coming back. And thats my point, why waste your time with idiots on a message board? If people werent so offended by their dumb comments, they would eventually get bored and leave. Some people are too sensitive. The real world is a lot tougher than a dental message board.

Again, what does reporting do? The thread that has been hijacked has already been hijacked. There will always be people who come in and mess up a thread. As long as there are idiots running around, that will be an occurrence.

I can understand moderators roaming through threads cleaning up any mess that has been caused. Thats their job and they are good at it. What I dont understand is why anyone would waste even a split second of their time to deal with a jackass by reporting him. I find it useless.

Reporting a thread can be a real benefit for moderators, such as Gavin, who watches over alot of forums and often doesn't have the time to read through threads. When you report a thread the moderators get a message and if they are not available the system administrators will get it as well. What benefit does it do? Well obviously it can't prevent certain individuals from hijacking a thread or acting inappropriately, but what it can do is ensure that when such behavior does crop up it can be quickly dealt with. SDN, which is 100% volunteer staffed, exists solely for the benefit of the guests that visit this site - and that includes everyone from the moderators to the person that casually logs on to read a thread or two - and promises a professional, neutral space in which individuals can pose questions, receive answers, seek help, and so on. Since it is around for your benefit the "Report Bad Post" function is one way in which you can take some responsibility/ownership to protect your community here and maintain an even keel of conversation which everyone values.

It only takes a second to report a bad post. All you have to do is click on the the upside down yield sign on the bottom left corner of the post, and you're done. You never have to fill out a 10 pages police report.

It is not useless at all, in reporting you can get rid of those jackasses for good! 👍

Well, I dont know. Like Ive been saying, threads will always continue to be hijacked, regardless of "reporting bad post" or not. Jackasses will continue coming back regardless of getting banned. It will never end regardless of how many bad posts have been reported. In fact, I think those "bad" people get a kick out of having others get their panties in a bunch. In a way, I think it drives the process, the more times people get "reported", the more they just want to retaliate. Its human nature. Therefore, if nobody ever made a big deal out of somebody being rude, then you would see a decrease in disruption. The reason people are idiots on here is so they can get a reaction, stir up some controversy. If they dont get that attention, they will stop. Again, human nature.

Even if it takes 1 second to report someone, I would rather use that time staring at a wall. Its really not that big of a deal if someone calls me a "poo poo head".

I just wanted to chip in my 2 cents in favor of the mods. If anyone has visited an unmoderated forum or chat room and then visits a moderated one such as this, it is immediately apparent that moderation is not only valuable but essential to maintaining a worthwhile board that normal people will want to return to and participate in. anyway keep up the good work guys 🙂

Just to clarify, if Ive been misunderstood...

Moderators are absolutely necessary. Ive never said that we dont need them or that they are useless. They are doing their jobs well and they are very helpful in addressing students with their questions and concerns.

With that said, I cant believe people actually use the "report post" button. 😉

I understood ya, there's just been a lot of negativity in general going around these days about moderation, so i just wanted to say my piece 🙂

about the report post button... I've used it a couple times before when I was offended by an excessive amount of extreme language in one or two posts, but now I pretty much just don't open threads anymore if they seem to be the type that will annoy me.

So what I want to know is how many people report bad posts that aren't actually that bad? Do over-sensitive people report that often?

One of my favorite sections in the school paper is the police blotter - it's amazing to see what kind of stuff the cops get called for. My favorite from today's issue is a response to a fire alarm triggered because somebody in the dorms was spraying a bee with body spray and tripped a smoke alarm. Every couple of weeks the police will respond to a "suspicious person" phone call and they never find anyone doing anything.

This is a poor argument. There is nothing "professional" about this forum whatsoever. Especially in this "pre-dental" forum where there are probably numerous people who will not be accepted to dental school.

People should be civilized on SDN because it's generally rude to do otherwise for anyone (future medical/dental professionals, or just your average joe on the street). And this is a forum for learning things, not to have a bunch of fun.

I think the "professional" argument is an ok one. I mean, if you think about it, a pre-bookie forum or a pre-pimp forum would probably not be held to the same standards as a pre-professional forum.

Haha, pre-pimp. That would be an interesting forum.

Yeah, classes on how to keep your goldfish alive in those fish-tank, high-heel boots. 😛

But I disagree, the "professional" arguement doesn't hold for me. I think people throw that word around a little too much. SDN isn't a clinic, and this isn't some sort of website that provides sanctioned dental advice.

Regardless, we can agree that people should behave on the site. 😀

I'd like to join the pre-bookie forums. That would be a fun one. I love that stuff.

If the Rockets win the championship, which they will, I win 3500 bucks 😀 .

Are you serious? How much do you lose otherwise?

I'd love to see the Heat take it all. Not that I like shaq that much, I just hate Kobe think the Lakers are *****s for trading shaq.

I used to bet online a bunch back in college. About a month ago, I logged on for the heck of it and noticed I had a 100 dollars in my account that I didnt know about. Since it really didnt matter to me at that point, I bet it on the Rockets at 35-1. So, if I lose, thats fine because the money was just sitting their without my knowledge for 2 years. If I win, then I'll be dropping it in Vegas.

I agree with you about Kobe and Shaq. If my Rockets dont do any damage, Im all for the Heat. It would be a nice way of Shaq giving Kobe the finger. Plus, Im a big fan of Wade. The dude is a stud.
