How do you guys feel about the quality of education at Temple Dental? I hear the clinical experience is excellent and starts early. Anybody have anything bad to say about Temple and why?

I didn't apply there but I think it is a great school. Depending on what your goals are after you graduate. If you plan on practicing or specializing, temple would be great. If you're looking into research, go to a more didactic school like Upenn. That is not to say UPenn is not clinical.

the clinical is great, but everything looked outdated (they are upgrading by 2010 if i remember correctly). also that area of phili looks pretty shady..

the facilities didn't look that outdated when i visited. they're rennovating anyway.

because of the large patient pool in the area, you'll get the kind of clinical experience that you won't get at other schools.

have heard good things about the clinic. I have also heard hte area is bad around the campus so you have to be careful. But shady area = more patients for you. I guess its a give and take? But in terms of everything BESIDES location I have not heard anything bad.

I am a Junior in undergrad and Brian gave me a tour there this summer. While it does look kind of outdated, he assured me that they are renovating within the next few years so that will be fixed. He also said that they have something like 60,000+ patients from the area so he said that you will see plenty of cases of every kind..."even ones you don't ever want to see again". I talked to some of the students and walked through a few summer classes with students working and overall, I got the feeling like everyone worked together and I got the impression that Temple was sort of like a small (500 some students) family. A couple of upperclassmen assured me that this was true.

Overall, it is going to be one of my top choices when I apply someday. The area is so-so (but everyone knows this). From being here at Temple Undergrad already, I have found that if you are not out on the streets at NIGHT you should be ok.

Just my astute observation.

I see on your predents you interviewed at Temple yesterday...How did it go? What kind of questions did they ask?

Temple just got a new dean, who apparently plans to renovate everything and make the school top-notch in terms of facilities, equipment, and clinics. I heard him say it at his introduction meeting.

Indeed, shady area = lots of patients. Temple also attracts more patients because they have lower dental fees than UPenn.

The funny thing is that lots of kids in my class (Temple class of 2012) plan on specializing, and I heard the same about Class of 2011 here. So do not plan for an easy ride if you are coming here with intentions of specializing. However, I do like the fact that the professors I have had so far are very fair, nice, and approachable (I am a first-year). In fact, I could not have asked for better. So far, I love Temple.

Anything bad?... Philadelphia. I don't like Philadelphia.

I'm currently a D1 at Temple and here is what i can tell you. Basically what others have posted is right on. The staff, faculty, and student body all interact like a small friendly community. Everyone is very helpful and accommodating. Awesome clinical experience from an enormous patient pool. I haven't talked to any upper classmen who have had problems getting patients or working in different departments. Only downside is the facilities need an update. We just got a new dean who assured us the clinic and two main lecture halls will be completely remolded by 2010, which is when the school is up for re-accreditation so i believe him. So if you were accepted in 2009 by the time you get into the clinic in 2011 the renovations should be complete. As for the city, I personally think Philly is an awesome city to live in. The school is in the ghetto, but as long as you don't go wondering down side streets by yourself at night its nothing to be worried about. Two of my female classmates often walk the 1/2 mile to the train stop and they've never had a problem.

There are some current Temple students floating around these boards; if they catch the title of this thread than they will answer you better than any of us Pre-Dents could.
