So, I'm just curious (not personally interested in derm - i'm a surgery wannabe...), but how do people who apply to derm and prelim years get notified today if they matched into a prelim spot, but not into a categorical spot?

For instance, let's say an applicant did get a prelim medicine spot, but failed to match into a categorical dermatology position. Will that person get an email today telling him/her that they didn't match? Or will that person be told that he/she matched, but has to wait until match day to see if that coveted derm categorical position came through.

neither really - they get an email saying "congratulations you have matched to a 1 year position", so they know. Unless they applied to a backup specialty. In which case it just says "You matched" and they have to wait till Thursday to find out what into.

True. If you had a ROL with Derm spots for #1-10, but two "backup" non-Derms for #11+12, you will not know before Thursday if you actually got a Derm spot, even after receiving a "you matched" mail.
