How do residents do signout nowadays? Back in the 00s we used paper (folded lengthwise so it would fit in our white coats). It had a homebrew collection of CC, HPI, Meds, allergies, key labs, etc. What do they use now? Is there software or something like that? Just curious.

I don't know, but I love how we do it as Attendings. Hight five!

Honestly there is not great software for handoffs IMO because as usual the EMR is not actually built to optimize physician use, or at least there wasn't as of like two years ago

We had a resident-created template that auto pulled in *some* stuff that was useful, and then we took notes as needed. The EHR can do a lot more for people than they know, but it takes real dedication and time to get it down for optimal efficiency. Classic case of not having enough time to make more time.

Most places use electronic signouts now, usually built into the hospital’s EMR system. Some still have their own templates or use shared docs if the system isn’t great for signouts.

In Epic theres a handoff section where you can have one-liner, to dos (days/nights), situational awareness/contingencies, and just overall notes.

Honestly starting with the "watchers" and explaining the to-do's for the night person is most of it

My program also uses the handoff section in Epic, I've found it to be pretty helpful.
