I had done a year in community college back in 2003. My GPA from this college is much low.

I wonder how would I be screened at primary applications? Do med schools considers GPA from last 5 years?

Any solution, advice and opinion?

Thank you,

Simple answer: yes, it will hurt you; no, it won't hurt as much as it would if it were from last year. If your total cumulative is above a 3.0 (i.e., a 3.0-3.5) and your last 5 years are above a 3.7, you probably have nothing to worry about.

Which means you still need a string of As to bring the GPA up into the competitive range and prove you've not the same unmotivated person you used to be.

Yeah true, I don't even know what my GPA is for that one year. But yeah my overall GPA should be definitely above 3.0 with my last 5 year GPA could max my GPA to 3.79 if I get straight A in my next, last 5 courses. So, basically I would be screened with my overall GPA? I think I will try to get answers from some schools that I will be likely applying.

I don't know about being unmotivated person. I was an immigrant with no idea of GPA and how it used to work (I know this sounds stupid at this point). I also had major family and financial problems along with my current epilepsy from past 9 years. Apart, at that point I never wanted to be doctor. I got addicted to medicine in my undergraduate third year. From then, I have shown a good progress.

(Sorry I am not trying to earn sympathies here as it might seem. Just wanted to give a idea from where I began)

Some schools do have GPA cutoffs, but I don't think any of those cutoffs go above a 3.0. You should contact your community college and find out what your GPA was so there are no surprises when you're filling out AMCAS.

Also, some of those issues about your grades sound like things you could address in your personal statement. 🙂

Good idea. Why not just get an official copy of your transcript, because you'll need to enter it into the AMCAS site exactly the way it reads anyway. If you don't know your overall GPA from both schools, you don't know how much damage control you need to accomplish with a compensatory MCAT score, or whether you have a good chance at MD and/or DO med schools.

In general, you are screened by your overall GPA, BCPM GPA, and MCAT score. After that is passed, someone will evaluate the finer details. Don't worry about one bad year. Many students need some time to adjust to what is required in college, and you aren't alone in having a sucky freshman-year GPA.

I'm curious what the GPA cut-offs for medical school are like. My understanding (based on no info at all) is that they are pretty low.

A very strong upward trend will help that old, low GPA out.....

Just get a copy of the transcript so you know what you are dealing with....

But, it will count and could hurt...just have to overcome!!
