I am 1/4 Ethiopian, 1/4 Arab, 1/4 Indian and 1/4 Mongolian...I indicated this on my AMCAS application but I look like a blend of all of them...Am I classified as a URM?

For the most part, none of the ethnic and racial components of your background is under-represented in medicine in the US on the basis of their representation in the US population as a whole. URM status is usually granted on the fact that certain minority groups like African-Americans and Mexican Latinos make up fewer US physicians percentage-wise than their percentage of the US population would indicate. For example, African-Americans make up ~15% of the US population, yet only ~4-5% of US physicians are African-American. I won't get into the reasons behind the disparity, but for various reasons medical schools can choose to factor URM status in their admissions decisions.

However, some medical schools may take your ethnic and racial background into consideration from a diversity standpoint. Just don't expect it to help you as much as URM status would.

You said you indicated on your AMCAS your origins, then leave it as that. We don't have to be defined as one thing. Yes there are only a few slots to check off on those types of apps but remember, there is OTHER>

I read the encyclopedia definition and it says by law that if you even have a drop of African blood you are considered black.

Being African-American, which is really what is considered an URM in the US, is not the same thing as being black. Being black is almost strictly a racial characteristic, while being African-American (or American Black, if you will) is a kind of combined racial and ethnic category. Being African-American entails both cultural and historical qualifications that non-US born and raised blacks do not usually have.

"Getting URM status" is something that you do by acknowledging membership in one of the groups that the AAMC and/or medical schools have designated as being under-represented in medicine in the US compared to their representation in the US population as a whole. The thing is, the AAMC and most medical schools rarely explicitly state what racial and ethnic groups they consider URM, so it's best just to answer questions about your racial/ethnic background truthfully and press on. For the most part, URM means being African-American, Mexican-American or Puerto Rican Latino, or Native American (the big four, so to speak). Of course, medical schools are free to include other groups that they feel deserve preferential consideration in admissions decisions, but those four are the ones that most will consider to be URM.

er, no. not if the person is ethiopian by descent but born and raised in america - that makes them african-american.
