at my school, org II is not offered with a lab.
i did take biochemistry which had a lab.
and, this is a canadian university.

how will the adcoms know if my org II had a lab or not?
the credit hours are the same for the class with a lab and without a lab (both 3.0).

in your AMCAS (common med school application) you will have to fill in the titles of courses you've taken and there's an option box you can check that says "lab course" and you also can type in "Organic Chemistry with lab" in the title of the course. plus AMCAS will compare what you've written with your transcript to verify what you've typed.

in the course title field, i put what it says on my transcript. and on my transcript, there is no mention of a lab or not for any of the courses that do have a lab. so, "Organic Chem I" is the official title and that had a lab. whereas "Organic Chem II" is the official title and it did not have a lab.
looking at my transcript, you wouldn't be able to tell; same credit hours for both of those classes.

i guess it just comes down to whether i checked the box saying it was a lab course?

well, my orgo course title does not have the with lab, but you're told in the AMCAS instructions to add the "with lab" if it indeed is a course with lab. i guess they're counting on you to be honest? anyway, don't worry about this now. the people at AMCAS pretty much have seen a lot of different kinds of courseloads at different university. just concentrate on getting your requirements done and done well!

OK, thanks, guys. i couldn't remember how i let them know which ones were labs and what not...
scary, i had no recollection of those boxes to check off :scared:

sorry to hijack the thread, but what if the lab course is seperate from the lecture course? do you put it down as seperate courses since there are different grades for both?

Yes, if it's a separate class, you would mark the lecture as "lecture only" and the lab as "lab only." Two classes on your transcript = two separate classes on AMCAS

How do you know which schools require that second orgo lab?

Essentially all of them, but the MSAR or each school's web site will have that info. A biochem lab will almost certainly be acceptable to replace organic II lab especially if the undergrad school doesn't even offer it.

Thanks for the info, I was confused since I already have 8 credits in orgo (2 lectures and 1 lab) and I thought that fulfilled the requirements.

It does at a few schools - pull out your trusty MSAR or look up the web sites of the schools you're interested in. Some just say "a year of organic chemistry with lab" while some say "8 credits of organic chemistry." Etc., etc.

If you took 1 organic lab for 2 credit hours, that fulfills the requirement. As long as you have 8 credit hours of organic chemistry (two 3 hour lectures and 2 hours worth of lab credit) you are fine.

Thanks for the clarification, b-real and liverotcod, I think med schools could be more specific about their requirements for labs and not have us wondering... 😉

They generally are,
It's in the MSAR.
(I'm feeling poetic)
