I was just wondering why people go into radiology, everyone I ask always say the lifestye, or the income, but other than monetary value why did some of you guys decide to go into radiology?

thanks,
Curious

Lifestyle: check
Money: check

Other things I like about radiology:
  • Anatomy
  • Pathology
  • Surgery
  • Toys (particularly 3D CT angio stuff)
  • Playing detective
  • Being able to sit in a comfortable chair most of the day

Things I don't like about non-radiology fields (namely surgery):
  • Clinic
  • Having a sore back/feet/arms from standing in one position in the OR all day.
  • Waking up at 5 am to pre-round on patients
  • Rounding on patients
  • The smell/sight of poo
  • The smell/sight of puke
  • The smell/sight of pee
  • Getting sued all the time (yes I realize radiologists get sued, no I don't believe they get sued nearly as often as general surgeons/neurosurgeons/OBGyns)

Rads always gets the third degree about 'why that specialty', not even pathology attracts the same attention even though they are practically the same specialty except w/ microscopes. Nobody ever says "why internal medicine", or "why surgery". Rads is simply the best, I find it hard to believe why med students would go into a field other than Rads, but I don't care enough to ask

How did you make the decision to go into Rads? I'm currently am M3 and feel like I haven't gotten enough exposure yet to make a decision. Time is counting down.
