I was wondering how does one go about applying for externships? and do all schools offer externships lets say in OMS (of course the schools that offer the specialty)? How competitive is it and what do they look at? Is there a special application forms or you just contact them directly...? Also is it possible to do OMS externships in 1st or 2nd year dental school?
thanks.

This may offer some HELP. But others in the dental residency forum may be more helpful. It seems that a basic requirement is to be at least a 3rd or 4th yr student. I am doubtful that they would allow a 1st or 2nd yr student to apply, but I could be wrong. Take care and GOD bless.

From what I have seen, the clinical externships are done when you are a D3 or D4, but there are lots of people who do research during the breaks of their D1/D2 year.

Many Students around SDN have talked a little about the NIH Summer Research Fellowship Program (SRFP). They accept 88 dental students and is usually done in that summer after D1, so it would apply to us incoming freshman. You should try to apply in the fall.

Here is the link.
