How do you guys stay focused on really boring verbal passages? I find the ones on mythology, history, etc bore me to tears--to the point where I am just reading words on a paper and can't even comprehend what the main point/central theme of the passage is.

I find these are the ones that are killing my score. I can miss none, maybe one on a passage where I'm interested and can easily formulate a main idea/central theme of the passage. However, on the ones where have no idea--I'm missing like 5!

What were some of the ways that helped you keep focus and still be able to actively read on boring passages? Even when you have no idea what was going on!!!!

You have to keep in mind that the boring passages are intentionally boring. It's supposed to wear your down. You just have to buildup a tolerance for it as well as the stamina to keep going. Verbal is really about getting as much practice as you possibly can, IMO. You should read passages as though you're reading a magazine article (big picture thinking and not get hung up on retaining facts). Read as much boring passages/material as you can and hopefully you'll cure any verbal section ADD.

Sorry to sound like an old ogre, but what the heck!!!!

Are you that spoiled rotten that you can't focus for 10 minutes on a passage and 60 minutes total? Just do it. If getting into med school is important to you then the MCAT is not "boring." It is the hoop you need to jump through to get into med school. Everyone must jump, and I don't hear a lot of other people saying it is "boring."

Take your ritalin and FOCUS like you mean it.

This post smells like a troll to me.

Just to be helpful, I found that the Princeton Review book on VR and WS to be valuable, especially for the WS section (I scored an R and am usually a poor writer on a first draft without spell check).

I'm not trolling by any means. This was a serious question--I'm not saying that I'm bored by the MCAT or that the MCAT in general is boring to me. I was just asking about how to stay focused reading long, convoluted passages about things that are not interesting (at least to me) like art, history, etc. I think that I have a really hard time comprehending these passages, which makes answering the questions hard, if not impossible.

Knowing you need to carefully read that thing to get in med school you won't feel it boring anymore.

Just focus as hard as possible, with the incentive that the faster you finish the passage, the sooner you get to go home and be railing
