This is the same excerpt from the earlier thread, "How do you feel about FMGs?" Only 1 thing is changed, which is highlighted in bold: each time a reference was made about FMGs in the original thread, I changed it to a reference to DOs.

I know that this might strike a nerve, but this has been eating away at me now for quite a while. Here's the story:

During my Ob/Gyn rotation last year, I was approached by a resident(DO) who wanted to know if I knew anyone who had the list for programs that had gone unmatched (this was the Monday of the match mind you). She mentioned that her friend (another DO), wanted the list to make an attempt at landing a job at one of these programas. I honestly didn't know anyone that hadn't matched so I said no. I finally caught on to what was going on later that evening (I was a third year...not giving a hoot about the match). Later on, I thought about the situation and wondered if I would've given the list to her even if I did have it. I can say that I have nothing against those that graduate from a non-MD school, but the thought of one of my classmates not matching because someone from outside the MD system landed that spot makes me feel a little easy. I know the sacrifice that we go through (time and financial), but must admit that I am ignorant to the constraints that are met in pursuing an non-MD degree. I was just curious to know how you all felt about this situation?????

I think it is complete BS that the SDN moderators absolutely ignore ppl when they rip FMGs, but they go ape s*it when there is an "MD vs.DO" war.

I personally believe that theres plenty of room for all MDs, DOs, and FMGs, and all are equally good. But all these defamatory threads are a violation of the SDN contract that each of us "agreed" to when we applied for our SDN memberships, and the SDN moderators continually refuse to enforce this clause.

Well, I hope u enjoy this thread. I hope people can see thru the thick sarcasm of this post.

It is all the same when you pass the USMLE 1, 2, 3.

This post is about your lack of experience in the real world. It's about your hatred and anger, arrogance, ego.

One day, I hope never, but one day and FMG may save your life. The FMG you see is the one with the dark skin or the different looks than you.

What if he does not have any of that. What if he is white?

I think you won't know the difference, unless he or she speaks a little different than you or looks different than you. It's all about your fear and anger.

Focus on yourself. Focus on your studies so you can be a good doctor. Trust me, you won't lose out on a job or a better income because you lost a job to an fmg. Not because they are not good doctor, but because there are lots of jobs for doctors.

EH.

I think he was just pointing out that people getting angry over FMG's is the same as people getting mad over DO's....he's saying it's asinine, as all these people are professionals, and good at what they do....

That's what I got out of it anyway.

FMGs in US residencies are generally a question of supply and demand. In specialities like Psych, Neuro, and OB/GYN there is simply a lack of US trained MDs willing to fill them. Of course, hospitals must turn to FMGs to pick up the slack. However, I will say that those FMGs are quite strong from a statistical point of view (good board scores).

For an FMG to be accepted at a residency that is more competitive requires significant achievements on their part. While I rotated through my Medicine clerkship, I was blown away by the competence of the few FMG residents that we had. If they are that good, then I don't have a problem with them taking positions that they clearly earned by merit.

Ditto for DOs.

Umm No, No there isnt. Thats the problem. Even if there are enough crappy residency type positions, there are no where near the good paying career type physician jobs there once were. Sure tons of crap pay, long hours HMO jobs, but medicine as a profession is dying in this country and dying FAST.

Huh? So you DON'T wish for an FMG to save someone's life? I'm assuming you meant that in the case it is needed, you do hope an MD(FMG or otherwise) saves your life. Also, alot of AMGs are also dark skinned, have accents, and are not Caucasian. Just clarifying things for the folks....

To the OP: Just so you know, the mods don't ignore people when they rip FMGs! As a matter of fact, a few of us mods are/were FMGs ourselves. However, they are cautiously left. It is important that biases against FMGs are made known to the general medical public so that everyone can see what sort of ignorance and prejudices are out there. Yes, it's unfortunate and a bit shocking that so-called "educated" people or those who think themselves of superior intelligence can be so narrow-minded, but it is a viewpoint shared by the not-so-uncommon minority. The same with DO threads. They're all watched.
