If you like to be around the same sex, naked in the gym dressing room, that would mean you are at the Y-M-C-A and that would mean you are GAY!

I don't even know where to begin with this.

North America, in comparison to European countries, is decades behind when it comes to nudity and sex.

They weren't saying they enjoyed it, they just found it off that we cover outelves up, and that sex is so taboo here. I remember we had some cadets from Sweden on exchange, and the girl was quite confused as to why we segragated male and female for sleeping arrangements.

I agree that it is odd that we are so big on 'covering up', as our bodies are natural. It's not like people are checking eachother out, but we go to fairly extreme lengths to make sure that no one is ever seen nude.

Does anyone feel cheated when spent 150 grand on a medical education some guy in India got for free and now you are both competing for the same jobs??

I know I do.

The point is, IMGs are CHEAP LABOR who dont complain, work free overtime and keep quiet. This is no different than WalMart hiring illegals to clean the stores at night. Lets stop lying to ourselves. Please.

How do you figure that "some guy in India" got a medical education for free?

Holy crap, are you serious...? You do realize that Europe is a heterogeneous entity, not consisting entirely of Nazi-era Germany and former Iron Curtain nations? If you want to dredge up only the dirty portions of the past, the U.S. has more than its share of ridiculous actions. We as a nation have devoted money and arms to countless violent conflicts, as well as to international defense.

European, and specifically Scandinavian countries have the best health indicators in the world - leaving the U.S. in the dust in terms of numerous measures (maternal and neonatal mortality, etc) Because of our fears about big government/my taxes going to subsidize that lazy guy who won't get a job, etc. 45 million U.S. citizens are uninsured - 75% of whom are employed in low-wage positions, but nevertheless contribute to the taxes that you mentioned.

Everyone who reacts defensively by lashing out and smacking all naysayers in the head with the American flag whenever anyone points out any of the faults of the U.S. or its leaders, simply contributes to the worldwide perception of the U.S. as a bunch of yes, ignorant cowboys who disregard the opinions of others if they conflict with their own. The U.S. was founded upon priniciples of freedom of political expression. I can't believe that future physicians would be mocking "foreigners" and telling them to "stay out of our country" if you disagree with us....

Calling the US 'masses of ignorants' is not being a naysayer, but rather, is being offensive, especially for someone who wants to come into this country as a GUEST for a federally-funded residency position...

As for historical examples of the morality of Europe v. the US, we were complicit too in a number of examples (Native Americans, Nazis, etc.). However, it is galling for peoples whose very life and liberty were tied to the shield of the United States snipe our foreign policy decisions when, faced with similar decisions in their own backyard, did nothing. I would not call Chechnya or the former Yugoslavia 'historical examples' in that they are current events, continuing to unfold in front of our eyes.

Finally NYC girl, do you really think that having government-subsidized health care will really significantly improve WHO statistical indicators such as infant mortality? How many patients have you seen with EVERY chance for primary care access, either through private or government means, not follow up in clinic only to bounce back in some ED? I've lost count. For whatever reason, our (US) culture does not put any personal responsibility for the maintence of health care on the patient. You can't force a teen mother to schedule regular prenatal visits. You can't force your CHF/ESRD patient to regularly follow up for their dialysis and watch what they eat. You can't force the obese patient to lose weight. Hell, Michigan had billions (I think 2) in surplus for their Child Health Insurance Program (free insurance for kids up to 18) because no one signed up for it. If there is anything the government should spend more money on, it's is primary preventative programs; ie encouragement for us as a nation to get off of our asses, exercise more, eat less, and ultimately, be healthier!

I don't know about the "free" part either, but it does burn me that it was so difficult to get into medical school and now it is so difficult to get into residency and then it will be so difficult to get a job because so many foreign doctors are trying to get work here also.

Okay, substitute India for China, I know education is free under Communism.

And we do have way too high taxes here (although eduaction including med school is for free and health care is basically for free too).
I kind of see it as a challenge discussing these things with Americans - our backgrounds are totally different - I'm slowly beginning/trying to understand this. I dont want to offend people but sometimes it's hard when you feel very strongly about things and you kind of want to "educate" them.

What gives you the right to "educate" the ignorant Americans?

IMO, this lies at the heart of the problem. The "superior" European who wants to "educate" the ignorant Americans.

Who exactly is emigrating where?

In the end, people vote with their feet. I've yet to see masses of Americans heading for Sweden, Finland or for that matter Canada.

What I do see is Europeans of all nationalities (and Canadians) coming to the U.S (nevermind all the other nationalities).

I recommend that you lose the attitude or not bother coming.

What cheap labor?

IMGs have identical contracts to AMGs at the same institution.

If you want to blame someone for the mediocre pay of residents, blame the NRMP, the AAMC, the AMA, the ACGME and the hospitals sponsoring residencies for wage collusion.

Blaming IMGs is plain stupid.

I don't mean telling what's right and what's wrong just that there are different ways to do things. It's fine with me if Americans or anyone else for that matter feel they want to educate me. If I would hate everything in America I wouldn't ever consider moving there, so yeah you're right people do vote with their feet. And I don't in any way feel "superior". Cheap shot, Miklos.

BTW Miklos, I never called the Americans ignorant, those were your very own words...

How do I feel about FMGs you ask? They cool, I'm down with them....some of my best friends are soon to be FMGs. 👍 👍

I think this thread should be closed. It serves no real purpose. It's just written to inspire an emotional response.

It's amazing the moderators will ban M.D. vs. D.O. threads but a thread containing bigotry is allowed to remain. I'm personally offended by this thread.

Why should Americans be quieted when everyone else is allowed to criticize America?

Yes I would. In addition, I would not go to any country where I don't agree with the government or governmental policies.

Okay...so why haven't you left yet? Is it because you have ALWAYS agreed with the government and their policies? I find it hard to believe that you have never had issue with ANY U.S. government during your teenage/adult life. Is it possible you have stayed here to pursue educational opportunities? If so, why deny that same right to anyone who might want to get excellent training here, but doesn't feel the love for the current administration?

It's not about me and what I do. It's about someone, coming to the US from another country, getting "excellent training" in medicine, treating the "ignorant American masses". I have personally seen the medical neglect that occurs when a doctor with this attitude comes to the US to provide healthcare. Why should we as Americans put up with this crap any longer?

A lot of FMG's are American citizens. They were just trained outside of the U.S. So many of the people you are criticizing are Americans.
