So I am a guy myself and I would be really interested in hearing women's views on male nureses? Are they considered girly? or lame? or are they respected for doing more of the scut work in order to take care of patients?

I hate to say it but personally when I see a male nurse, I just do not have the same respect for them as I do a doctor-automatically I think they could not hack medicine or else they would have done that-and my respect plummits-I wish it was not so but I cannot help what feelings go through me.

I was curiosu to see what all you think-times are definetly changing with lots of guys nursing. I cannot help but think if I was a male nurse (which a do not understand why we call them that since we do not premise other careers by female- etc ) anyway if I were a nurse, I would feel very subserviant to the doctors and I simply would never do it-anyway what do you all think?

In your astuteness, you noticed that nursing is the only profession in the world where a male has to take orders from another male. I am awed by your powers of observation and deductive reasoning.

That assumes that everyone in health care deep down wants to be a doctor and that those who chose another career path only did so because it was their second choice. Kind of arrogant, IMO.

Not everyone wants the debt, the years of training, the crazy work hours, the fear of litigation, the responsibiliy of running a business, the billing, etc. that we docs have to put up with. On the other hand, nurses (and other health care professionals) do a lot of stuff that I don't want to do. Viva la difference.

Just my observation, there seem to be a lot of male nurses in psych (my field) and I have nothing but respect for them. Lots in the ER too. And I don't think of them as "subserviant" since most of them have more experience than I do anyway. I think it's more productive to think of them as fellow members of the health care team.

But then, I'm a chick. Perhaps there's some primeval testosterone-driven male dominance dynamic going on between dude docs/nurses that I'm not privy to... 😉
 
I work with one male nurse down on L&D and we all generally love him. Some patients are initially surprised to see a guy, but many of them really like him by the end. We also have some male nurses over in NICU and I think the patients almost hold them to a higher standard (often mistaking them for doctors). There are two guys on the night shift up on our surgical floor that are damn good nurses and all around great guys. I don't think any of them have a "problem" taking "orders" from a girl like me, but at the same time, I'm not often ordering people around. And I've got as much to learn from them as they do from me. They can make the damn double pump IV box work, and god only knows I only break them. 🙂
 
I tend to agree that they are viewed as lesser than docs-but female nurses are just viewed as either fat and lazy or hot girlries that you want to nail

Dude if you have time in your program to be wondering about what being a male must feel like instead of busting your azz studying then you have bigger issues that you need to address. There is nothing wrong with being a nurse who happens to be a male and believe it or not, not everyone of us grew up wanting to be a Dr or a lawyer. People chose professions that they think better off reflects the lifestyle they want to have, personally if i could only work 3 days per week and get paid a decent salary with enough time for family and friends i would be happy. You need to find more to do with your spare time and quit thinking like a nazi, male chauvonism is dead dude...

PS: I am a male doctor.😀

Ok lets see here-what takes more time out of a day-pondering in the back of my mind how others view male nurses. Or-coming onto the internet, loggin into a medical forum, writing a paragraph on how I need to do better things with my time and if I had so much time to ponder a thought than I have other issues. Well based on your own arguement-if me wasting 5 seconds pondering a thought makes me have other issues. Than you spending 5 minutes replying to me means you have HUGE issues.

How do you even begin to respond to all of the ignorance and discrimination (for both women and men) in that post?

Are you even from this century, or have you somehow time-traveled from the 1950s?

People (men and women) choose nursing because it's what they want to do, not because they couldn't "hack" medicine.

Are you really that arrogant as to think that everyone in the medical professions who doesn't become a physician does so because they can't "hack" medicine, or do you reserve this particular piece of ridiculous thinking for men? Women, I assume, choose nursing because they don't or shouldn't have any higher aspirations?

Perhaps you should post this in the Women In Medicine forum? That would be interesting.

There's this secret decoder ring that you get when you graduate from nursing school...it has all the answers to stuff like how to get the triple pumps to work. But you have to swear a blood oath not to let the docs get hold of the ring. That would give them way too much power! :laugh:
 
Well not much as changed over 2 years since the last time I was on these boards-Same politically correct answers from the general schmucks to enter medicine. The same tools that were pre-meds-went on to be tools in med school and now going on strong as tools in residency.

If you panzies can't admit that you feel more bad'ass than a male nurse then you are FULL of IT-why can't anyone be honest for god sakes-bunch of losers
 
Well...I, for one, expect to see the same level of political correctness applied to both men and women; let's not have double standards. If we're going to talk about male nurses as "girly," then it follows that we would necessarily talk about female doctors as "manly."

Pretty logical, I'd say. And we're all certainly allowing for the woman-doctor thing, so the male nurse thing should similarly become a non-issue.
 
You are one of the dumbest people I have come across-I pray you are not a doctor. Going down in rank-is going in the wrong direction-going "down" into a female speciality is goin backwards-so it is pussyish. V. Females moving " up" in status is a good thing-so it does not deserve a negative spin-and think about it bozo-what do you think is more generally thought-male nurses as pathetic or women docs as manly? Have you not seen any pop culture movies or anything-meet the fockers comes to mind-the whole movie he is defending himself as a male nurse with that dad thinking he could not hack it. If a top hollywood movie uses this scenario, you do not think it is a generally accepted generalization that appeals to this countries pop culture. God you guys are dense
 
what if there was a female surgeon telling a male nurse what to do? I wouldn't risk it as there are already other signs that the apocolypse is nearing.
 
I actually love male nurses(or I should say one in particular) since I am married to one🙂 I am a graduating EM resident and my husband went from respiratory therapy to nursing and honestly still gives me personal consults regarding vent management better then any pulmonologist I know. I think it is stupid to think that everyone wants to be a doctor or to think that someone's sex should have any bearing on how that are view professionally. Historically nursing used to be a female only field however with the job security, increasing bonuses and flexibility this job is now highly sought by a mixture of people.
 
Well I guess it is my own fault-I was interested in seeing what normal people thought of male nurses. And interested in seeing what HOT attractive girls thought of male nurses. Asking female doctors who are knowingly the fugliest girls out there is a bad indicator. So what if a ugly female doc loves a male nurse. I am looking for opinions of more attractive girls who are more sought after and more normal.

Anyway it looks as if no guys either are willing to be honest-so forget I started the thread!
 
I'm a male doc... and I like male nurses way over female nurses but that's because we share more common interests probably...... and no I'm not gay...
 
In addition, male nurses are going to be in higher demand considering the increasing weight of the average american.

Um... Modern educated people don't think like this anymore.

Medical schools are 50/50 male to female, and will only become more female-dominated because guys don't academically achieve when they're in college (NY Times). And there continues to be huge nursing shortages nationwide. The whole male-doctor-female-nurse thing is going out of fashion. Time Magazine did a piece on "Pink Collar" jobs a few years (?) ago talking about the huge influx of men going into traditionally female careers like nursing and teaching. They said that influx will only get bigger when troops from Iraq come home and need to find a job fast. Maybe it's because these ex-military guys get medic training while they were serving, but many come back to civilian life as nurses, PAs, and surgical techs. At my hospital, the guy nurses tend to gravitate towards the ER and ICU. My guess is that these "manly men" are USE TO taking orders when they were in the military.

Personally, diversity is the best thing. I've noticed that whenever a bunch of guys get together (Ortho, Surg) or girls get together (OB, Pedi), you get this jacked up work environment with a subplot worthy of a bad daytime soap opera. Please. More men in nursing. More women in medicine. Thank you.

General Surgery is pretty much 50/50, and it still has a Sh*ty "subculture"...

Ortho is still mostly male, but has a much more mellow "subculture". I did many Ortho electives, and I loved each and every one of them...No, I am not gay.

The thing is...it has nothing to do with diversity. Diversity is niether good nor bad...IT IS IRRELEVANT. It has NOTHING to do with anything.

The REALITY is that nursing is a profession, and medicine is a profession....Anyone who is qualified (male or female) can do both.
 
My point is that FORCE INTRODUCING males into Ob/Gyn, or FORCE INTRODUCING females into General sx...does not automatically make Ob/Gyn and GS better.

A profession's "sub-culture" is due to the nature of the profession...not due to the sex of the professionals.

Gender is irrelavent.

Apocalypse now 😉 -- I'm going into surgery, and my boyfriend is a CRNA, so get used to this female MD male RN dynamic.

Frankly, he's one year out of school making at least 2/3 of what a new anesthesia attending makes, and he only works 50-60 hours a week. I'm glad one of us had the good sense not to go the MD route.

Nurses are nurses. Some are women, some are men. Believe it or not, not everybody gives a **** about being a doctor or working "under"/with one. Most importantly, being male AND being a nurse does not show that one cannot hack it in medicine. Life's little circumstances often dictate the paths we take. Perhaps it's a second career to someone who has a family who doesn't have 10 years to spare with med school and residency (given time or resources this individual may blow you usmle scores away), maybe it's their stepping stone before applying to medschool/business school/law school or maybe, wait..are you ready....SOMETHING THEY REALLY WANT TO DO. I think nurses male or female are an essential part this whole healthcare deal...and they'll be there after you and I enter med school/residency.

Let me give you some insight if I may. Some of us did not take school seriously from a young age, some of us don't have the money for medical school and some of us do it for our own personal reasons.
I will say this; I am a straight divorced male with a daughter. 30 years old and formerly an automotive technician. I played football in highschool and womanized for about half my life. I'm not stupid, I'm not gay or weak or anyone that doesn't deserve your respect and from what I've noticed you require mine as much as I require yours. Think before you talk, if you're smart enough to be an MD surely you can do that.

I don't mind male nurses except in one setting...

The L&D floor... I am a male, and if I have a male nurse and need to do a cervical exam, I need a female "observer" in addition to the RN - which makes it more difficult for me.
