I am having such a hard time finding EC's to participate in. The only thing that comes to mind is to volunteer at the hospital near our school, but every premed and their mother does that. I see so many of you have such awesome EC's but how do you go about finding them?

Your Career Services office at your undergrad should have a list of local non-profits in the area. These can lead you to some interesting activities. They may even have like a list of internships or volunteer projects out there that need volunteers.

I did not go through my college to find my EC's. I put myself out there, steered by my passion for children, people with disabilities and the Deaf community, I was able to network my way into three separate organizations, two of which will also provide me with clinical roles in addition to community service.

I knew what I wanted to become: a role model for people with disabilities. I went out into the world and made that dream a reality.

Every semester, our school has this huge event for all the clubs and organizations who basically want you to join. You should also try your school's website for more info. Try talking to an advisor or counselor at your school; he/she might be able to help. I'm only in a few ECs, and I'm hoping to do some shadowing, too. I don't know if your school has a Pre-Health Mentoring office or anything similar. They might be able to help. It also depends on what you're interested in doing. Find something you're interested in and stick with it.

Ask your friends. Chances are that one of them has a really interesting activity that might interest you. If you're having trouble, start your own club if you want.

I love that.

I heard Google is a great resource.

That's a great idea. Some kids at our school started a quidditch team.😉

Also idealist.org lists thousands of great volunteer opportunities. You can search by area and keyword. For clinical opportunities, virtually every hospital or free clinic has a volunteer program so call whichever one you are interested in. Everyone does it because it is usually a lot easier to line up than a long-term shadowing gig. For research, find a list of faculty at your undergrad or the closest major research undergrad. Read up on their current research interests to see what you like. Start sending some emails to offer them free help...you will probably get a positive response by email#10

Good Luck!

I would look around the What Are My Chances threads too. Lots of people list their ECs in there. And what year are you? If you're toward the start of college, you have time to figure out what you're really passionate about. Just a few months ago did i really begin to figure out what i was passionate about and i'm heading into my junior year.

Yeah, but stay away away from college clubs unless they do community outreach work. Most of those clubs are garbage.

Yeah sorta, but if it's something fun and doesn't hurt his grades/other ECs then go ahead.

1.Go get a pencil and paper
2.Think of the qualities a doctor should have. Write them down.
3.Think of activities to show without a doubt that you have these qualities. Write them down.
4.Think of activities that will show that you know all there is to know about what the medical field is like and what it is like to be a doctor. Write them down.
5.Think of activities that will show you have what it takes to last throughout medical school. Write them down.
6.Think of some things that are unique and that you will have a good time with. Write them down.

Congrats, you now have a plan for some A++ ECs.

Like others have said, ask your fellow pre-med classmates/advisors and see what they usually do. For example, there's a free clinic near our campus that many of my pre-med friends volunteer at and I help patients battling obesity. Volunteering at a local homeless shelter is another idea.
