Is it possible to have any control over where you get in to medical school? I really want to go to Michigan State and have good stats, but am scared about not having any control and giving it all up to chance. Any advice?

I don't know how you would go about giving advice...the bottom line is this is all your decision...if you want to go there and don't get in the first time you can apply again..and if you want to be a doctor bad enough then I guess you will consider other schools....hmmm..advice..how about talking to some students from Michigan or adcom, find out and special things they are particular about when interviewing, looking at apps...etc...Best of luck :xf:

There will always be an element of chance involved. Just like undergrad, right?

Just keep in mind that what you think you want isn't always the same thing as what is really best for you. Apply broadly and let the schools make their case at interviews.

Great advice.

Keep an open mind, and don't get too hung up on where you go. Unless there's some sort of unique thing about the curriculum at MSU, your education will be very similar anywhere. Let the schools plead their case, you might just decide you're much fonder of a different school when you get to see them at interview time.

At the end of my last interview, I got the usual "do you have any questions for us?" that is always asked. I went blank for a second and the only thing I could conjur up was something about having my own reasons for why I thought I should attend the school, and wanting to hear both of my interviewers tell me why THEY thought I should attend their school.

Afterward they commended me for the excellent question. Guess they felt like I was really taking the process seriously.

Its not chance and if you think its solely luck, you are foolish.

You will be fine if you have "good grades" and are socially normal

3.65/27+ along with 1000+ volunteer hours will give you a very strong chance at MSUCOM. I would go as far as guaranteed admission paired with a good secondary, keep in mind there is no interview. Obviously you don't need all of the things I just listed but that would certainly minimize "chance". Also apply early, get the secondary in before the adcom starts reviewing them (August)

If you want in at MSU, apply to both the DO and MD programs. There were about half the med students I met from MSU MD program that were rejected from the COM program.
